putting a new mechanical fuel pump on and switching the fitting to a 3/8 barb to match my carb. When I put the new barb in do I need to use some sort of sealant on the threads?

Definitely wouldn't hurt, I roll with the white plumber's tape

Depends on what the pump "is." Can you post a good clear photo? Some of the Carter aftermarket hi perf. pumps are pipe thread. There is no seat at the bottom, the hole goes clear through. You want sealer, and be careful tightening too tight, as pipe thread is tapered, and can spread and crack a casting

Most OEM pumps are inverted flare. They have a seat at the bottom and SHOULD NOT USE sealer, as the tube seals on the flare

This adapter is inverted flare on the near end (mates with tube above) and pipe thread on the other

You should not need nor should you use sealer on inverted flare

plumbers tape is not recommended for fuel fittings as it can tear during installation and end up in the fuel. Use Permatex HP thread sealer.

I agree with this^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
plumbers tape will be better than nothing, as long as u don`t go over the end where it can be cut and get in the system, and wrap it in the right direction.

I REALLY LIKE USING PERMATEX TEFLON PASTE, BEST THREAD SEALANT I`VE USED IN OVER 46 YRS OF PLUMBING.
