I am taking on a small project for someone. Low mileage 89 360 out of a truck. He is dropping it off and 1000.00. Motor runs great but want some performance increase but it will be a daily beater and will retain HP Exhaust manifolds which he has now.... Fuel management is a Holley Snipe and MSD ignition.

The only other thing he is bringing is a set of low mileage 915's done about 10 years ago.

So what would you change? If he sees anything near 300hp it will exceed his goals....

Cam is usually a good start. I'd keep the LSA above 108 and the lift around .500 or below. Port and polish, with some springs goes a long way for heads. Aluminum dual plane intake will help keep it streetable and it'll lighten up the motor quite a bit. Oh and a 700 dollar cold air intake filter goes with out saying.

I am curious as to if he will be better off with the 915's.... I have some time to research it to see what I come up with... As for the cam, the LSA will be pretty wide with the fuel injection which is OK as he doesn't need a firebreather lol....

And where did you find a Cold Air setup for under 1000.00 lol....

89 roller motor should have 308 heads. If never overheated they should be crack free. Depending on the work done to the 915s you may have 2 decent sets of heads to work with.
Cam it, a little head work along with an intake and sniper. I think 350 hp imho.

KB pistons get the compression up piston open/ closed head dependent
just a multi angle valve job and blend the bowls
i would not put in a longer cam with low compression in a truck

He'll have 300 plus HP just bolting headers on.

Shop the classifieds for a good carb and cross the fingers for a reasonable cost intake. That’s the big expense.
Cheap Headers, cheap mufflers, 2 straight pipes, clamps, adapters & hangers. End it at the rear axle.
Pace Performance ready to run Distributor (inexpensive)

Upgrade cam later.

yep, a good 4bbl and intake along with a set of headers, that roller 360 with 308 heads will be around 300 hp.
  • I had the exact '89 360 TBI in a D150 with single exhaust, 3.21 gears, stock auto and it ran 15.3's in the 1/4.
  • It will also have a block off plate where the mechanical fuel pump would be, and the fuel pump eccentric will be on the cam already.

I talked to the guy for a few minutes yesterday evening and I told him to KISS on the deal..... RRR you are right about headers and I told him a set of Dougs Headers are exactly what this setup needs.

I sold him a Weiand 8007 intake for it. The heads will come off and will likely get a retouched valvejob and fresh springs. The guy has a fast foxbody so if it got near 300hp he will be more than content....
