Hi Guys, I received an Edelbrock Performer (Model 2176) intake to install on my 65' Barracuda. The engine is a 1969 318. Finally pulled the engine and got it on an engine stand, pulled off the stock intake and I was anxious to test fit my new intake......Sits fine, but there are sections of the engine that are not covered by the new intake, middle, both sides...It looks strange to me. Is this gap filled by the gasket upon installation or is there something going on here that I should be aware of? Thanks for your advice...

If you're talking about the middle of the heads, thats normal to be open there. The end rails are filled with a cork gasket, or a wall of silicone.

Heat sinks for the exhaust crossover. They were exposed with the stock intake, you just didn't notice. Perfectly normal.

Normal, they are left open on them all.... your talk'n about the "U" shaped openings in the center.

again....as stated before in many other threads....this question should be a sticky as it comes up ALL the time!

You will find 2 dowel pins in the block for the end gaskets. One at the front and one at the rear.Aftermarket intakes are not drilled and the intake will not sit flush unless you remove the pins or drill the manifold. Most just remove the pins.

you talking these gaps? They are normal too, just a die cut gasket void to nothing.

The op mentioned "middle both sides" inhis original post. Normal.

Yeah, looking closer now and seeing the tag along with the smear of silicone on the block it's been apart before. If they decked the block and heads the manifold might need a cut to match. Might.

I bought a 408 Stroker a while back and the guys that threw it together didn't pull the locating pins on the China walls. They must have gooped 2 or 3 tubes of silicone to try to stop the leaks. What a mess. The photo is after a lot of scraping. You can see the silicone all the way to the edge.

Thanks to all my Mopar brothers for the swift response....The gaps I was concerned about are indeed in the middle of the intake. Dowel pins are not there any more. There is a rebuilders tag on the block. National engines and parts Co. Engine stock # 71736 engine code k6990...I cannot find any reference for this company or record of these numbers. I would love to know a little more about the beating heart of my Barracuda. I am actually happy that this is a rebuilt engine rather than just a tired, old 318. Any help would be appreciated.

I would pull the timing cover and check the chain and possibly replace with a better one and a tensioner. You might get some grind numbers off the cam if it has any. If it has grind numbers and you can get a cam card, degree it.

Stock intake didnt cover those either. The gap is to keep head cooler by isolating the exhaust crossover passage from the head as much as possible.
