I want to replace the wood grain overlay, on both my gauge cluster and consul. What is the best way to remove the old overlay, without damaging the plastic.

Heat gun or hair dryer. Don't get it too hot. Keep the gun moving.

My overlays on a barracuda rally dash were aluminum. The pulled some black paint off that was underneath. I used a thin plastic scraper and gently lifted the pieces off. Heat could probably be used to soften any adhesive, but risky.
I have not removed the overlay from a console. I wish I could find a burlwood console overlay, have only ever seen one.

Heat gun, hair dryer like what was suggested, be careful. If your overlay is in good shape, I would just cover over it. What I am going to do is cover mine with vinyl film, get this at any sign shop or order it online. The vinyl film pictured here is called, “Bravo Burl”, I like the looks. There are other textures and colors, many, many, others designs.

How about the plastic lenses, has any one tried using headlight lens restorer to get then clear again ?

I've used polishing compound with success. Rubbing compound in severe cases. Both followed by wax.

So true...Always start with a lesser compound, "bite wise", if feels like it isn't cutting it, move up to something more aggressive, then finish off. This what I use for that purpose, but there are many more products out there.......
