What's your experience with these trucks? Also what about fuel mileage? Would be interested in both 2wd and 4x4 feedback. I've owned 90's era Chevy PU's and there very reliable and easy to work on. I would probably be looking at gas powered only. Thanks!

I have owned several, my current one being a 2013 Black Diamond edition Avalanche 4WD. My current rig gets 19 on a road trip and 17 around town. 5.2 engine. I drive it hard and fast and this is my 2nd avalanche, they are essentially a Silverado. I wrung my last one completely out as a work rig at 160,000 miles. I don't think you can do much to improve the mileage but 2 WD may get better mileage.

That's fair mpg in my opinion. Any repair issues beyond normal maintenance? Thanks for your reply.

No repair issues, the brakes are good for about 70K and at 100K you will want to change plugs and whatever. Transmission flush about 80K is always a good idea. My last Avalanche needed about $2500+ front suspension work at 160K, hence the 2013 Black Diamond. One thing to note, they are very comfortable, my wife will always want to take the truck as opposed to her Acura RDX every time. Those trucks cruise in comfort. Stay away from wheels over 18" as larger ones effect shift points out of the torque curve.

Just read an article about vehicles the are expected to reach 250,000 miles. That was one of them.

Really do your homework. I have managed a repair shop for the last 15 years or so. Late model GM stuff very common issues. Hub bearing failures, lifter failures, ABS module faults, (will not pass inspection in a lot of counties with abs or brake warning lights on) Instrument cluster failures, and 50% of them fail inspection due to a piss poor parking brake setup. But any of them have their faults no matter what brand you choose. GM just seems to have a lot more in my experience.

Thanks for your insight.

i had an '11 that met an untimely demise and now have a '13. replaced rotors & pads at 20k and again at 47k. truck does sit a lot as i have a company vehicle. tires were done at 30k. 15 mpg, 18 on a trip. no real issues. truck runs & rides nice. i like it.

My sister is a die hard Chevy truck girl, her last one, the rear end went out at 37,000 miles, wheel bearings left her stranded at 60,000, and the last straw the fuel pump went out.
Nothing covered under warrantee, she fixed the fuel pump and traded in on a Toyota.
She said it was a POS compared to her last Silverado, she is easy on trucks, puts a blanket in the bedliner when she hauls anything, the truck was a pretty POS when she traded it in, let the next sucker deal with chevys poor quality, her exact words.

I bought a 2013 off the show room floor. It was the biggest pos I have ever owned. The General tried to fix it but only made it worse. The first year it was at the dealership longer than I had it. Absolutely do not buy 1 with a 3 as the first digit in the serial number, 3 means it was assembled in Mexico. I work on them almost everyday and most have the dreaded 3. Kim

Appreciate everyones reply's, good or bad, keep them coming. I'm still trying to decide if this is the way I want to go. I have a 97 crew cab 4x4 that's really nice, but I'm just over 200,000. It still runs great but with retirement looming and the desire to travel, I thought something newer might be in order.

Good to know about the "3". Thanks.

Not in the same year bracket, mine is 2008 4x4. I have replaced the front lower ball joints 3 times in 60K miles. Other than that a battery and brake pedal switch. (cruise control). IMO a great truck except for front end. I do all recommended maintenance on schedule.

Thanks jammer

I looked at a 2014 with 5.3 did not buy it. Engine shakes at a idle. Could hear it, see it, feel it in floor. Sales guy told me they do that cause the computer cuts it down to a 4 cylinder at idle?

I wonder what year they started that? I'll have to look into it, thanks 67

SO how long have you had the 318 engine in it?

I currently own 6 of them. They are without a doubt the best trucks ever to roam this planet. The grim reaper himself will have to pry them from my icy fingers. I've never gotten the "we're broke down" phone call. Every one still has the factory belts, hoses, and batteries. Besides oil, not a single thing has ever been done under the hood of any of them. The only complaint I have is the daytime headlamps. Keep a pair in the glove box. Take out the top bolt on the wiper reservoir, and unbolt the air box. Then you can change them at night with no tools. If you have any specific questions just ask.

To answer your mpg question...the 5.3 and 6.2 get very similar mileage. 18avg 20highway. The 6.0's get 15 no matter what. All my trucks are 4x4 and have tools, racks, ect totaling approximately 1000lbs every single day. Oil at 10k, trans at 30k, diffs and transfer case at 60k. Ball joints, rod ends, sway links, bushings, shocks, struts, brakes, hubs, ect at 150k. I consider suspension, steering, and brakes to be regular maintenance items and don't wait for them to break. A $1,000 at rock auto and an afternoon, and I have zero worries for another 150k.

I've got a 2018 Silverado and I absolutely love it. It hauls cars, horses and the like. I would of bought a ram but I hated the dial a gear. Just didn't think a truck should have a dial to select the gear.

My 2017 Ram has a normal shifter, on the column.

When I went looking back in May/June I couldn't find a single Ram without the dial. Unless I stepped up to a 2500 or 3500 truck.

Mine is a 3500, rough riding gas hog.
