Is anyone using this cam in their small block? any 318's specifically? I was thinking about trying one in a drag car only. 3200 pound Dart, 4.10 gear and a built 904 with 8" converter. I would also be using stuff I already have like my Edelbrock performer rpm heads and intake. My curreny 360 runs 11.0's @ 123 but want to have a back up short block ready. It's a rebuilt 318 with pistons at zero deck height. It was run previously in another car with the MP 474 cam, 3.55 gears and a 727 with a 10" converter. Ran mid 13's @ 104

I'm not sure if this will be of any help to you or not..........use it as food for thought.........I'm running a Comp Cams XTQ281S-6 solid in my "Mean Teen", the build is listed in "12 second combinations"

How about any other hydraulic cam recomendations?

I would not use the obsolete non HL version
If you are not experienced I would check with Porter (comp dealer if I remember correctly) and Racer Brown
There are several vendors of quality MOPAR cams
Lunati Voodoo series,
Howard (in the catalog look for a (15) footnote, compare the (15) to one without :)
Engle has lots of experience with MOPAR
Bullet has many choices
find a grinder you can work with

I'm a little confused; you want a teener back-up to a 360?
My short answer is that the teener is a little short of swept volume.
It will get you down the track, but IDK man , that's a lotta work for a low13/maybe high 12

I tend to disagree a little.........when I went 12.54 with my teener I really didn't work all that hard to do it.........a friend went 12.7 with his 66 Barracuda powered with a teener, less cam that the ex284.....more gear (5.13)......the OP has a better short block than I started with, put decent heads and intake on it and go....admittedly much will be dependent on chassis set up ...to go faster than mid 12'sI will admit that it will start taking more effort.......

I think he means if the current 360 blows up, to put all his top end on the 318 and then swap motors. That's a chitload of work just to go slower. He's talking backing up his 11.0@123 with a 12.9@106 or something.
I'm still confused why OP wouldn't just build up a 360 short for a spare and sell the teener.
And Ima thinking the plan is then to fix the blowed-up 360 and re-install it, so then that's undoing all that chitload of work and redoing it ..... again
Or did I misunderstand?

Yup, the teener is back up to the 360........I think the OP is doing it this way as it is what he already has on hand and just making the best of what he has

That's exactly what I'm doing. I have the 318 already and I just found that cam for sale on another mopar site so I am going to go for it. Thanks for the feedback everyone.

he has not got the message that that cam is obsolete
but if it was cheap witht he lifters he can spend his time on oiling mods
It's a chevy cam but if we're just having fun...

Fyi I'm using an obsolete mp 590 solid and doing well enough that when I called comp and Hughes about upgrading they said they wouldn't have a suggestion to upgrade my combo

a 318 is not a 360
And a 318 at 9.5 with a 285* cam and aluminum big ports,
has one mode of operation, namely WOT,
and at most other modes of operation, is a sure recipe for disappointment.
With an ICA of 68*, and at 9.5Scr, your Dcr is down at 7.33, about 1.5 to 2 full points down from optimum with aluminum heads. Your cranking pressure is predicted to be 145psi. A good 45 pounds low.
I get that this is a race-only application.
I get that you're not afraid of the hours that will go into the transfer of the top-end, or the hours to swap the engines over. And the hours to swap it back after the 360 comes back from the engine shop. I get that.
What I don't get is why not sell that nice zero-deck 318 shortblock. and just put the money into 360short, that can stay under the hood when yur done swapping.
The exact same parts in/on a zero-deck 360 is good for 10.7/8.3/170psi/.039Q.
If you pop the pistons up just .008, you get 10.9/8.44/174/.031Q ,and now you got yourself a tiger by the tail,
just about the same as my streeter @3467 with my 220 in the saddle.
BTW, mine runs 87E10 @ full timing, and has for over 100,000 miles. She's not as fast or quick as yours tho........ but I also don't have a 590cam in it,lol,
Whatever you decide, I get that you're a hard-worker, an admirable quality.

Mr. Burch, isn't a 66 Barracuda much lighter than a 3200 pound A-body? @JBurch

I'll be brutality honest, I don't know what Rob's 66 weighed, it was all steel, full interior; my 65 scaled at 3080 with me, 180lb, in it.....so lighter, yes, but not by a huge margin
