As progress goes on my funds for this car keep getting smaller and smaller. I had planned on buying new rotors for this car and still might later on but for now do you think they are safe to use? They have plenty of material left and dont seem to cracked or anything. But there is some pitting from rust from the years of sitting. I cleaned them up and they dont have bad to me. Are they serviceable or scrap?

What's the measured thickness? What's the accepted minimum thickness?

I’d have them turned if they’re thick enough. The pitting towards the center hub is an area the pads haven’t rode

It says on the rotor in the indents on the face . They look chitty.

In the big scheme of things Brake Stuff is dirt cheap. I'd see if they're turnable and use them. If not remanufactured ones are not that much more expensive.

Last time I went to have a set turned it was about 10 bucks more for new rotors vs turning...

Yip and 25 each to turn...

I use to turn a lot of rotors, it takes about 30 min to turn one? With the shop labor rates now days it's a no brainer for shop to not turn. They cant make money doing it..

I do not turn rotors anymore replace with new only .

Long ago we used to remove the bearings and races, put it in parts washer, mic if for thickness, turn it and mic it again. If the thickness was in tolerance limits we would put fresh bearings in and go with it.

Back then I was making 6.75 an hour? So even at that rate the shop making 20 bucks a set? Add the cost of the machine, training a guy to run it, buying mics that get dropped, ect... = nope....

Yea I wouldn't spend money on turning them they are about 80 bucks shipped from either summit or rockauto I was just hoping to save 80 bucks. I really want to replace them because everything else is new and I don't want old rusty rotors with my new hose, lines, pads, and freshly painted calipers lol but the more I think about it I could use that 80 dollars somewhere else and noone is ever gonna see my rotors other than the alignment guy.

Sorry to side track your thread.

I remember I was 16 and ran the machine shop at my family's auto parts store. My step dad played me minimum wage. One day a guy walks into the shop and asked "hey kid, who runs the shop?" I replied "I run it, what can I do for ya sir?"

He kinda looked around at the cars on the lifts, all the cylinder heads, the steaming hot tank, roasting oven, a head tumbling in the tumbler, short blocks on stands and said, "where's your mechanic?" I replied that's me sir, what can I do for ya?"

He said, you can come work for me. I'll pay you 10 dollars cash an hour. I walked up stairs. Told my step day I quit and moved out the next day.

I use to work until the boss left then I would sleep in my car in the parking lot until a half hour before he showed up and act like I got to work early...

Good times!

Not sure why all this came out but turning rotors just brought me back.

Long story short. Buy new rotors.

:)

No apologies needed I like your story! I probably will replace them just for the fact its gonna impossible for me to put old rusty rotors on after all my hard work restoring them suspension parts. Lol so do you still work at the same shop?

You went to the wrong place. We charge 10 bucks each at work. Free for commercial accounts.

Wow! I have been educated by the replies. I had no idea the Chinesium stuff is so cheap as to nearly eliminate turning rotors. Thanks guys.

Then I saw RustyRatRod post after I posted. Ten bucks to turn a rotor is what I paid last time I did the brakes.

No that guy is long gone.

I have my own shop now. We do custom metal fab on hot rods and race cars.
It makes me said when I walk into the back of an O'riley and see the red lines painted on the floor where the machines use to be.

There's just no money in standard automotive machine work.

Autozone bought out our family shop in 2008. They came in and said we can sell or they will open a store across the street and run us out. Our shop was opened by my grandpa in 1953. They removed all the lifts and machines and now it's just like every other chain auto parts store..... it sucks...

Those things look rough. They’re probably turnable, but I wouldn’t run them without turning them.

Looks like the thickness of the rotor on the hub side is quite a bit thinner than on the backside. Means it was wearing uneven last time around. Overall thickness might come out ok, but after you turn them there won’t be a ton of meat on the front side.

I’d buy a new set, but that’s just me.

I have a brake lathe tucked away, just in case i need to cut a rotor or drum. Or machine a flywheel. I can throw on a toolpost grinder if i need.

I dont advertise the fact i can machine brake parts, as the current stuff can be difficult.
And labour wise its more profitable and practical to replace with new.
If my rotors look like yours,i’d be a happy camper and clean em up.

thanks that's probably what I will do!

Cool I always wanted to get into machine shop and never did It. I always like metal work I do some amature gunsmithing. I can do a some stuff with a lathe but I wish I would have went to school and really learned it. It would be so cool to work for myself. Machine work weither it be for engines guns knifes or just general fabrication is not cheap wish I would have pursued that dream. Oh well live and learn lol

It's never to late.

We got a great FABO discount at our shop. I will make what ever you want at no charge. Just come hang out or send me your drawing.

Ask Jpar I spent a ton of hours on his scoop and he didn't like it so It went into the scrap bin and I still wanna make him something.
