So on my 340 currently, I have the 90 deg filter adapter that goes on with the big hollow bolt. I'm going to be relocating the filter so I got the Canton adapter. I'm assuming that I need to pick up a short nipple and thread it into the block in order to use the Canton adapter?? Any old nipple will do? Should I use stainless?? Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

if i understand this correctly, the big bolt that goes through the canton plate should screw unto the nipple?

if thats the case, i would pull the nipple out of the 90 degree adapter, screw it into the block and rock it

You need to have the standard filter adapter installed first. We just used the standard one with it's nipple.

I installed mine with the bolt used on the standard filter plate. You can get them from Mopar.

OBTW, we did the mod to the filter plate to drill 4 more holes and enlarge the 4 original ones a bit. Plus the fittings from the Canton adpater to which to couple the AN fittings, and the hose adapters to the remote filter mount, were all drilled out to enlarge them as much as we could. Everything to minimize pressure loss at each little step in the flow.

So basically, I have to spend some more money for another part?? Ughhh.

I wonder why that wouldn't work???

Except the diameter of the filter end is smaller than the diameter of the block end. So I'm guessing the rubber seal wouldn't have anything to seal against in that scenario.

What size drill bit did you go up to??

that is news to me
to the bet of my knowledge both sides were the exact same, and it didnt matter how you screw it in
(we are talking only about the pipe nipple, right?)

If you just screwed in the nipple from the end of the 90 to the block, then the Canton adapter could screw on, but because it's the same diameter as a filter, it would have nothing to seal against without the oil filter plate. Here's one in this thread: [Found!] - Oil filter plate

You basically have to either get one of these:

Or one of these:

Currently, I have neither.

gotcha...i thought we were only talking about the nipple

that nipple is about $4 online, do a search on that part number and it will come up same for a jeep, I used it on a 273 and it fit pefectly, same cross reference :

FYI an old 3 piece after market Chevy oil cooler had the 2 bung adapter that fit perfectly over the Mopar plate raised boss and it has an o-ring. Ill see if I can get a pic of it and its fit on the Mopar plate.

OP, I THINK this '93 Jeep/Magnum part is the same stock type filter plate; it is listed for use on later 318's and 3.9L, and uses the same Felpro outer gasket as listed for the older engines (Felpro 70522). Plate is Mopar PN 53021053 (replaces 53009219). Fits the same filter gasket, and filter thread, as the older engines.

Maybe someone else here knows for sure if these later ones will fit properly on the pre-Magnum blocks OK or not.. Seems like there are some of these out there on eBay, etc.

For the OP.... I got one of those Magnum filter plates (PN 53021053) and it was not quite a proper fit for a 360 block. The center section, where the installing nipple applies pressure, is almost parallel to the outer edge (see pix 1), versus an offset on the older ones. So it won't put proper pressure on the outer edge gasket on an LA block.

With some judicious light press work, I made it fit for my 360 block. (Pix 1 and 2). The 'modification' did tilt the filter gasket surface a tad (pix 3 and 4), but it is as flat or flatter than some of the older ones (like in your pix), so I feel it is going to be OK.

One other thing: My '68 273 block has a deeper machined step for the plate's outer gasket (by about .080") than the later 360 block. So your 340 may also have a deeper step and you may not be able to use this 'modified' Magnum plate. We used the plate from this 273 block on our 340. I suspect I am just going to grind down the center 'nub' (into which the plate nipple threads) to close that gap up for this 273, and use the modified Magnum plate. But grinding on the oil system may not be an option for you at this stage of the game.
