Battery cables -where does the negative go?

Joe, although this is for a ‘65, this is the closest thing I have to “the Bible”: February ‘65 Hot Rod. Check it Out.

Clifftt- thank you very much! That picture is worth a million words. Really appreciate it.

Strange looking cables. I have never noticed that style on a Mopar before. I thought because it was a Hot Rod article it might be a California build. Now I need to look other magazine articles and photos. My 66 Dart gas the original positive cable and it doesn't look like that one. Interesting.

1966 Dart in a 66 Hot Rod article. Note the shape of the cable clamp and the ground wire bolted to the water pump. I don't think any particular location is "proper".

Toolman Mike- I bought the new cable set from a place in CA that just re-pops battery cables. A positive and neg cable set was like $240. Really nice set, about as OEM as I could find. And I do agree the picture of the factory neg battery side end looks like a foreign car of that era.
I just appreciate the information.

I think the correct answer is...wherever the assembly person bolted it to. I’ve seen lots in that untapped hole you have, and more than my share on the front exhaust manifold bolt too. I can check the 65 273 I have at the shop on Tuesday.

Thanks Cosgig!
I appreciate that. Funny how a simple question about a mundain thing created this large of a post and this much help.

I’m building not a 100 point restoration but a “period correct” looking 66 car. So all I can get correct the better.

I’m late to game here. The neg cable is bolted down to front intake bolt. The question about tapped hole in the heads: Each head has one end tapped on a 66. Depends how it is installed which end is tapped......lf my memory is correct

Just wondering, providing that your engine is well grounded to the body, could you run the negative battery cable from the battery directly below the battery to the frame?

You need a larger cable to the engine block to carry the amperage for the starter.

Okay- thanks for all the help. Now how was the original negative cable attached to the battery tray?

I believe it was a thin plastic strip taped to the cable and it had an “tit” that snapped into the battery tray side hole or am I off base here? I installed to the top fwd intake manifold bolt but the cable hangs down too close to the fan and power steering pulley for my likes. - The negative cable I am using is a factory reproduction cable for this car. Not aftermarket. It seems to be the same length as a cable I removed from the car 20years ago. That cable still had factory tag on it but the battery end was messed up so I replaced it.

@FISHYPETE ? My photos of your car doesn't show. Pete has the most beautifully restored 66 Barracuda I have seen.
