Just about ready to finish the 9" install.

Got a few questions.

Pinion angle. This is a street strip car running 4.88 rear, drag radials and 02 03 SS springs. More street than strip tho.
Should I go full 6/7 degrees negative or should I tame it down to more like -5?

With my spring sliders, should I set them centered in the travel or a little more to the rear? Some folks say center some say more to the rear... what do you think and why?

Heres the rear mocked up, OH Yeah! When the car went up on the lift it was 4 wheel drum with SPB, she rolling out BBP and 4 wheel disk. Once I get the pinion angle set, i will weld the perches and rebuild the back brace.

Notched the frame, boxed it in and moved the front hangars. I cant remember the member who I stole this idea from but hes in Hawaii and was very helpful. You know who you are and thank you!

Thank you. The first inch is kinda shaky but after that it does make me happy.

I burn a lot of welding wire and got more burns in more places than you want to know..

I really like that idea. I might just re-do mine like that as I have not set-up my rear yet. I might make my own adjustable bracket though. Nice work.

Oh I see. You already cut it. Just need to finish it off. :thumbsup:
 
I would wait to set opinion angle until I had it everything installed with the wheels on ground and suspension loaded as the Mopar Chasis Guide suggests, but that's just me. I believe it shows -3 to -5 degrees combined for your application. Combined is probably not the right term, but adding the pinion angle to the driveshaft angle.

Well, never mind, brian6pac posted the procedure while I was typing my reply. Thank you brian6pac as I'm on my cell and didn't have access to the procedure.
 
I think SS Springs recommend 5-7 degrees
With my shot SS Spring.... that were at 0 degrees, i think i will shoot more towards 7 degrees.

I have been told that the best u-joint life is no less than 2-1/2 degrees and average is 3-1/2 Degrees.

As far as your slider, i seen a video, on one of these thread, that show just how much the slider moved forward under launch.
From what i saw in that video, i would say more to the back then center of the slider.

I figured out the cut on the frame by lowering the car down over the assembled rear. Centered the tire in the wheel house, scribed the location of the front hangar then started cutting.

Full weight will be on the springs before I decide where to locate the sliders.
 
Where it is wont lower it any. It just puts the front spring eye on the same plane as it was before.

What does lower it is replacing the rear shackle with a slider. That should lower it about 2" as there is no shackle height.

It should be noted that I have a full 12 point roll cage and frame connectors, so removing the material from the frame in my opinion isn't a big deal.
 
With out the notch it would have raised the rear almost 6 inches.

So if you just weld the hangar to the rails you best make it a 4x4 or a solid front axle gaser.

I don`t know how much h.p. ur going to have , but myself, I`m giving up on drag radials. They remind me of m-h slicks , back in the day, don`t have enough initial bite for my car.
GRANTED, THERE ARE SOME DANG FAST CARS RUNNING THEM, BUT THEY ARE SCIENCED OUT AND MOST HAVE NEAR EXOTIC REAR SUSPENSIONS. (DAM CAPS !)
The cal tracs don't seem to work on mopars short front springs as well as the xxbrands longer springs. ????
 
Personally i think that part of the frame is 10X as strong as it was before. With or without frame connectors and roll cage.
Agreed. if you would have just welled it to the existing frame rail you would have need to put a solid front axle in it:poke::D
 
What I have done in the past was, after you are finished have someone lay on the ground next to the car and look at the pinion while you break torque it and see how much the pinion moves,
SS springs don't wrap up as much so 5-7 * might be to much. I have had to adjust with a tapered shim on my Cuda and I think it was a 2* shim.

Here's a link to a video that should convince you to center the travel more to the rear. Watch the spring action and shackle movement throughout both the burnout and especially the launch and run.



 
Man, what a PITA... got the calipers on, had to clearance em to fit inside the wheel.

The aluminum bushing on the spring slider didn't fit in the rear spring eye, so spent some time on the lathe making those fit...

Got everything mocked up and pretty sure the springs are on the wrong side so took it all back apart and swapped those side to side...

Battery cable was in the way so rerouted that...

Hopefully tomorrow I can just mock it all back up, locate the sliders, make some plates and weld the sliders on and be done with this....

Then I still need to try and find a conversion u joint, a brake line, make new hard lines, decide on a pinion angle, remount the cage for the fuel cell, move the fuel filter and pump, bend new hard lines for the fuel and more that I'm sure I'm forgetting... Ugh...


oh yeah do a big smoky burnout and launch the car in the parking lot!
 
Axle is in! Pinion angle is -6 at ride height. Sliders are 2/3rds to the rear. Axle is moved back 1.5" from factory location. Fuel cell cage and cell are in. Fuel pump and filter no longer fit so gotta do something about that, return line is on.

I'm so close I can taste the burnt rubber!

Just gotta figure out drive shaft, brake lines and hook up a few wires and AWAY WE GO!!

Sooo close now.

Just gotta hook up the battery, bleed brakes, fill dif, check trans and tighten a few bolts!!

Ended up getting a new drive shaft made, solid 1350 u joints and 3.5 inch tube.

Its 2.5 inch. I put it in the car a long time ago. Its probably time to go 3" tho..
