buying a car he says it runs 13.20 in quarter with out all the particulars what would be a guess on the mph in the 1/4? also is a 360 mopar the same as a 360 amc ? parts interchange able ? thanks
 
Without a 60' time mph can be a bit tough. If the car didn't hook and spun and had difficulties hooking up it could be running higher mph, if it hooked hard with slicks the MPH could be lower. Rear end gearing can also make a big difference. Getting a car to launch hard off the line and get through that first 60' fast is what gets low ET's.
 
it has new TCI 2800-3000 CONVERTOR AND NEW 410 GEARS also alum intake and msd distributor used 750 edelbrock has 1.6 rockers [? dont know why they would put adjustable rockers on a hyd cam ]he didnt know what cam was in it has manual valve body i cant believe it went so slow ? what changes could i make to motor to get in 12sec range also has headers and mt drag radicals let me know what you think
 
Tough to give you input when we don't know what the car is... weight, differential, suspension, etc. Is it an AMC with an AMC 360? Javelin? Gremlin? AMX? Matador? Hornet?
As far as getting into the 12's, it's almost there now... you can pick up 2 or 3 tenths with driving proficiency and air quality.
 
Gremlins never came with 360 so hard to say on the stock hp. Unless it's out of an early '70s muscle car, it's gonna be a mild smog engine.

What makes AMC 360 and 401 great is the cylinder heads and tough bottom ends - you can make great hp with the right parts thrown at it.
 
451Cuda is right, Gremlins never came with a 360. The biggest factory motor was the anemic 304.

If you know the year of the motor, here is a rough indication of stock horsepower:
1970-71 was 285-295 HP
1971-75 was 175-220 HP
1976 was 140-180 HP
later 360's were in the 160HP range, stock.

This engine was used in the 1970 AMX as the base engine and also in the 1970 Rebel, 1971-1978 Matador, Jeep J-series trucks 1970-1987, Wagoneer (SJ) models from 1972 to 1984, Cherokee (SJ) from 1974 to 1983, as well as in the full-sized Grand Wagoneer from 1984 to 1991 - becoming the last carbureted engine used in an American-built vehicle. The 360 V8 was also installed in the Bricklin SV-1 sports car for 1974 model year.

The 360 was the last AMC V8 to be manufactured. It continued to be produced after Chrysler bought American Motors in 1987 as the standard engine in the Jeep Grand Wagoneer through 1991, with the only modification being the "360" casting replaced with "5.9L" on the side of the block.
 
Gotta be careful with AMC because you have to know what to look for to tell if it's a 304, 343, 360, 390 or 401. Didn't they have a 290 V8 also? Similar situation exists with Mopar 273/318/340/360. Time slips would be nice to confirm ET's. Needless to say, aftermarket parts are much less common than for Mopars.

A magazine did do a comparison between a Dodge Demon 340 & AMC Hornet 360, '71 or '72. 340 was faster but the 360 Hornet did pretty well.

AMC did have Torqueflites in some applications. The bellhousing is different but I never researched any more than that.
 
727 is exactly the same except for the bell housing, i rebuilt one for my dad behind his 401 in his cj7.
 
he said it was a 360 but 74 never offered a 360 in the gremlin he said it went 13.22 at 98 mile per hr in 1/4 mile ? he has nothing to back up any thing he says so didnt buy it rather have a duster or dart race car
 
Like any brand you need to know how healthy the motor is. How well it's sealed,all cylinders equal,yada yada. Same with the rest of the car.
 
Gremlins are pretty light. You could get one with a fairly mild 304 in the 13s with no problem whatsoever........much less a 360.....AMC or Mopar. With simple bolt on parts such as intakes, headers, carburetors and camshafts, the 304 can be anything but "anemic". The AMC cylinder head is pretty good, since a lot of pro stock head configurations through the 70s used their port technology.

Look on either side of the block right under the motor mount and the displacement should be cast in.
