Hi folks , I am planning a "B" engine build and I have a couple of questions . Is there a roller cam available that doesn't require a bronze distributor drive ? And , if a roller cam requires a cam thrust button , what is the clearance ? Thanks and Merry Christmas and Healthy New Year . Too Tall Tom from Tilton

Not that I know of but I could be wrong. Last time I talked to Comp tech line about it they said that all Mopar roller cam cores require the bronze gear. However, you might be able to use the new Hughes melonized gear. It is supposed to last a lot longer than a bronze gear so give them a call and see what they say.

Hughes has them, small and big block. They say they are compatible with roller or flat tappet cams.

Thanks guys . I'm thinking the Hughs one is stupid expensive ? Who said this hobby was cheap ?

It is, the first time you don’t have to change it cause the bronze one is razor thin, it’s paid for itself.

I run .007 on the cam button clearance on a 505" wedge w/ a solid street roller.

Thanks bob , so if I'm .006-.008" I'm good for a street/strip hooter . Never did a roller motor before but I can clearly see the advantages . Take care .

Had .010 on a hot 406 sbc , no bad effects.

What's your car run Bob ? Whats your cam specs

Only made 2 runs. It spun so bad I didn`t even want to mess with it, only went 11;90`s.
It needs bigger tires on it, didn`t lift the front end at all. Thinking about mini tubbing and slicks, the 295 65 15 drag radials aint gonna do it for me. Did`nt even try adjusting the cal tracs, it went pretty straight the way I had them set, just not enough tire. I am not interested in trying to science it out for the drag radials/ too old to mess with it that much.
adv. duration285/254 , 248/254 @ .050 , lift is .616-.622 , lobe sep. is 113 .
Had to go a little smaller on the cam and the wider lobe sep. to make my fuel inj. work better.
1200 cfm throttle body and they told me my cam was too big, go figure !!

None of the hydraulic rollers require a bronze gear, do they?

I think it depends on wheather it`s cast or billet . I had a cast hyd. roller once that didn`t require it, but it was very loud, went to a solid roller. Most all solid rollers are billet--------------

FYI, Bob , we are running 245/60 M/T's in a '66 Cuda , no mini tubs SS springs with snubber 10.66 et on a well prepped track . You can run quick without cutting up your ride . Just need the right combination . Car does a wheelie for about 100 ft and comes down super easy . does 10.90's all day

Yeah, I definitely have a problem, I had a 3500 pound (w/o me), 92 gmc pick up that went as quick. It didn`t haver a traction problem tho w/ 10" slicks, it was hooked up.
I can get 10" , maybe 10.5" slicks on this one , but w/ this much torque I don't think they would lift the magnum force front end. It doesn`t have a whole bunch of travel, and not springy at all. It had 500# (coil over) springs in it when I bought it, and rode like an unsuspended go cart. I changed the springs to 350# , rode better but don`t lift at all. I think it will take gobs of initial bite to make it lift. ??????????

What motor you using and cubic inches
505" wedge w/ raised port heads, solid roller , 727, 3;73 / dana 60 w/ Detroit locker, 1200 cfm fuel inj. system.
Going to put a 5800 gov. in the trans next, then maybe mini tub it--------------Don't get around to doing too much in cold weather, and being 72 yrs. old !
Am thinking I still have some rings that aren`t seated-------------2 runs down the quarter, and a little hot rodding on the street, w/ about 500ish (guessing) miles, you`d think they would be seated ! Doesn`t seem to have any blow by to speak of tho.

Yeah , me too . snow/sleet/rain is here now . It is 72* in the house and I'm freezing . No wonder folks move to Florida/Arizona .
