6BTM or locked out timing?

Hello,
I am still collecting parts for my 225 turbo build.
Now i am at a point of wanting to select my ignition control.
I currently run a stock distributor (1972)with pertronix module.
Will a 6BTSM work with the stock distributor? I have an available dizzy from a later slant, 1978 i believe or can i just lock out the distributor to 18 degrees? How is the distributor locked out, i havent seen a procedure as to how to do this but am still searching. Car will be street driven always with some highway use.
Money is of concern, but i will spend it where it makes good sense. Thanks

I'm not too familiar with your plans - but do you have a management system picked out yet? Going EFI or keeping carb? Most EFI systems utilize spark control and at that point a locked out dizzy allows the ECM to do all timing adjustments.

I should have mentioned it, i am using a Holley 500cfm two barrel blow thru with hanger 18 mods.
Intercooler, boost reference fuel pump with return line .
O2 sensor.
 
I'm not very familiar with the guts of the S6 distributors but I have to imagine that they are similar to their v8 cousins in that they have springs and weights that control the timing curve advance and those are the components that must be "locked" in order to fix your timing at a particular setting. That would be the cheapest route. Locked distributor at 18 degrees and just sacrifice some streetability. Also, you could look for a "lean burn" slant distributor. Those don't have weights or springs and are essentially "locked" from the factory. How built is your Slant? Is it a forged assembly stock?

Actually pretty easy, weld the cam stop to the top of the weights and what I do to get rid of the vac is take it off and then drill a hole through the base plate and tap it 10/32 and install a screw.
 
Ok then, set just 18• base timing with a timing light, after those small mods? Is it that easy? I should look at my later distributor, it may be suitable without modification.
The motor itself is completely stock. About 130k miles on it, runs nice, uses no oil.

The msd btm is well worth it for street driving. I used one on my turbo 4 door build.

It’s an MSD box that has a boost reference line. You can adjust a dial to remove X degrees of timing per pound of boost. That way it drives completely normal when you’re not into the boost. I used mine with my stock electronic Mopar distributor in the 318. Don’t see why it wouldn’t work with a slant six dizzy.

Thanks man. If the OP wants some help on it, he needs to post up some specs on it. When asking questions and wanting help, if people have to look for answers that should have been posted the first time around, that lessens the chances for a good discussion and a good answer. So some more info is necessary here.

Here is a link to the SUPER low buck turbo valiant I build years ago. Definitely down and dirty. Junkyard turbos, boost referenced mechanical pump etc. Wish I still had it but it ended up oversees somewhere. Even though the BTM cost a bit (I got a used one off of craigslist) it was well worth it for driveability. PS, I don’t think the forced induction section existed on forabodiesonly back then

Yes perhaps i should have posted more information on the Msd timing master. It is on this site where i first learned about it, so i made the presumption that everyone knows about it.

This is a trial run into turbocharging, if it works out well, i am going to want something with larger displacement to do the same to. Hoping to cut my teeth on a motor ive already got.
 
For a street driven car, you do not want fixed timing. Most street driving, is done "off boost", so why set up the ign timing for the small amount of time you will be on boost. Performance and fuel mileage will suffer. Spend the money for some kind of boost timing control.

Because I know how to look at a wiring diagram. Been a mechanic since 1974. Because I'm not green behind the ears. Don't sweat it though man. I can help somebody else that's more appreciative that I even tried.
 
I am pretty sure I have a lean burn s6 distributor.
I will let it go cheap, I do not have any s6 anymore.

Brother i meant no offence to you or your abilities. I am sure you are competent in what you do. You clearly have thousands of posts.
I read what MSD claims the boostmaster can do.
I was looking for someone who would comment on the component in question and say “yes money well spent”, or “no dont bother this is a better or less expensive alternative. After searching further, there was someone who built a device on their own based on O.E.components , which was suitable for pulling out 5 degrees of timing during boost.
Clever but not what ultimately what i will need.

I’d like to mention that if you’re not even going past 6 lbs of boost, you may not even need to lock out the distributor or even run the btm. Set total time to 30* and walk away. As long as you’re not running on a razors edge of high compression and/or questionable afr.
 
I would be curious if anyone has used Progression Ignition?
These are distributors with the adjustable timing built into the unit.
These have a complete ignition map, accessible via Bluetooth and an app on your smart phone for $479-529.
Not cheap, but compared to a new distributor, MSD, and piggyback boost retard box, it is a steal......at least it seems so?!
 
Thought about locking it out and going MSD 6530 programmable? Best of all worlds. Start retard and boost retard.

I have never used it so take my word with a grain of salt, just bought it for my turbo setup that is still in progress. From what I understand it also has 3 rev limiters. Burnout, 2 step, and overall limit. All programmable from a laptop. Let us know what you find. All for around 430$?

This was my plan for a very modest 5-6psi setup on my 318. I figured (possibly incorrectly) that my adjustable vacuum advance might give me back a few degrees, at least at very low throttle.
I am however now running a stock distributor with the 5pin HEI module that when the 5th. Pin is grounded via a pressure switch, retards the ignition 5 degrees!
I just bought this new for $10 on eBay, and can now also run a big coil with no ballast resistor.

BTW, I am pretty sure I read about doing this here in this forum, so thanks guys!
