TF 727 Guru?

Okay, stupid question time. By output end do you mean the end of the shaft that sticks out from the rear end of the tail housing.
Okay I know those cats are messing with you but here's the slow scoop on that. they're trying to say is the shaft that you want you know doesn't go all the way through the transmission it stopped short at the front and then butts into the one that actually does come out the front. I believe what they were good in that is theirs Factory clarence's between the two that have to be pretty correct. So getting them together gets allI the tolerance is correct automatically more or less without fighting it.
All 727 are strong Transmissions LOL if you want my personal opinion if that transmission ran so good I would try and sell it and just get the correct one it's just so much less hassle. Even to get the correct one and put $120 rebuild kit in it.

Okay, thank you. That clears up a bunch. It IS a good unit and I really would like to keep it. Sigh...I guess I will have to sell it, although I am fairly sure there has been some significant upgrades put in it that I will lose with a new unit. Also, I don't have the money to just go and buy a whole new unit. Thanks for the advice and I will think about what I can do here.

It is an easy enough task to change the output housing and shaft, to convert the transmission to a long tailshaft slip yoke style. You just need to ensure that the output shaft you use is correct to mate to the forward planetary carrier. Other than the oddball 65 and prior stuff there are only two shafts, 75 and earlier and 76 and later. The difference is that the splines on the forward end of the shaft are cut differently and must match the planetary carrier.

So if I buy a 75 and earlier unit I will be okay? Yes? Mine is a 1973.

Yes, as long as someone hasnt already changed the guts to later style. Your best bet is to pull it apart, once apart you can tell visually what style output shaft you have and need. I have both an early and a late style if you need one.

Since you live in Vermont , get in touch with Chris or Craig Munroe @ TSR racing in Gilsum/Keene New Hampshire . their father , Carl Munroe , wrote the book on 727's . They built my transmission and it's no joke . These folks are super nice and super easy to do business with . It is a business , however , and they are super busy . Try them , you got nothing to loose .

I will get with them and thank you. I am also talking with Torqueflite/ patty on e bay.

I usually see core transmissions for around a hundred bucks on Craigslist pretty often. Oh, like that with $120 rebuild kit and and $80 transgo shift kit and you're off and banging gears.

I mean think about it if you were going to take that shaft out you were going to rebuild the entire transmission anyways.

That's true. Sigh, I just hate to toss/sell a tranny I know to be good and start over again. Although, I suppose that I could take the performance parts out of this one and incorporate them into the next one.

What performance parts are in it again?

I'm at an appointment waiting to get the shot in my eyeball so I won't be talking for long out here as I won't be able to see my phone here in a few minutes. But I'll be back in a few hours LOL

Also I'm no 727 Guru. I rebuild a couple 904 before and they're very similar if not the same in some instances. 70ARRCuda has helped many people with their automatic transmissions and has even sent a few people rebuild DVDs. Very boring and very dry but very informative.

it's basically the pump that pulls off the front then a drum with the reverse and 3rd gear clutches and a drum behind that with the first and second gear clutches and behind that is the planetary gear. taking one apart is just watching a couple videos and doing just that taking it apart one piece by one piece spreading it out changing out the seals and things they give you and cleaning it all and putting it back in the same way you took it out with the new seals in it and gaskets. That's all there is to it. You pull out the clutch dish and the plates and you replace the clutch disc in her plates the same way you took them out of each drum. It's really a no-brainer once you get in there. Just a lot of cleaning.

^^^that was just one long voice command I wasn't going to take the time to correct all that so I hope it didn't say nothing weird like this....

No, it didn't sound like a backwards record.." Freddy is the devil...Freddy is the devil"....or anything..lol. I surmised as much, that it was not really a super technical deal or anything. Something other than a straight up rebuild might be another story though. I do have that manual by Munroe over in NH. That will be good too.
