This morning I got all my chores done early and was looking for something else to do. Some years ago I purchased two small block oil pans and never opened the shipping box. Well, Christmas is here and Santa brought me nothing (bad boy?) so I open the box.

I pull out two small block oil pans with the number "394" stamped into the bottom of each one. Not sure of the specific application of the 394 oil pan. The pans were stuck together, to save shipping space, so I pulled them apart.

Lo and behold and much to my surprise, I windage tray had been packed between the two oil pans! I pulled out the primed windage tray I had in the garage from a used California 340 I purchased to compare the two.

I noticed two discrepancies right off the bat, the bolt attachment holes are oval/elongated on the one that came in the box. And the cut-outs in the sheet metal are different between the two, both front and rear cutouts. Not what I expected to find.

I'm going without the windage tray in my 340 build because the deepened pan I purchased has a scraper and baffles, so the windage tray is a moot point at the moment. I would still like to know the application for the "394" oil pans though. Thank you.

The difference in trays is one is for the 340, possibly an OE tray since the holes are not slotted. Or an early MP tray which is really the same thing.

The slotted holds one is for ether 340 or 360. It is probably a MP tray.

X2 I do have have a stock 340 tray, and a new MP one in the box, if it really matters I can take a picture of the two.
The slotted holes are to make it fit all small blocks.

I see my steering link is trying to punch a hole in the driver's side of my 12/79 casting dated 318 block that is installed in a '65 Barracuda. The number on the oil pan looks to be something like "388" or "389".

Now I wonder if the "394" has a better cut-out to avoid rubbing on the steering link in the first generation Barracuda?

Was ur car a v8 factory?, if not have u installed the v8 drag link? Kim

Yes it was a factory V-8, Formula S, in fact.

The two "394" oil pans have a factory dent/relief about 17 1/2" from the front on the driver's side, which appears to be the correct spot to miss the steering link. I hope so.

IIRC there was a 360 windage tray also, different part number than 340. Probably the one with the oval holes. Do both have the same height when mounted? Id expect the 360 to be a little taller on the bosses.

The half circle on the front of the Mopar Performance windage tray is for the dipstick.
I also have a windage tray looks like the rusty one. I haven't tried seeing how it fits in the stock pan but it must be just enough different that the dipstick clears the tray.

Seems like one time putting a tray 340 on 360 I had to use some washers between the tray and the caps for rod bolt clearance.

were 340 and 360 main caps the same height/bolt width? I asked the fella that I bought the tray from and he told me it was for a 360 as the part number was different than a 340. Don't know the diff as I never had 2 side by side for comparison. Rumble, you got 5 minutes to eyeball both models to see if there is any diff besides the bolt hole shape? Im thinking the depth of the bolt hole from the OD of the tray would be the only difference I could imagine (360 being a deeper stamping) if it were in fact a stroke issue. Or the part number changed to signify the oblong bolt holes...Interesting. IIRC the counterweight dimension is most likely the same. if that were true then the rod journal would be farther out from CL and the rod caps/nuts/threads would be farther out too.

Forgive this reply, due to my back being out of wack (staircases are a challenge) and what I said being backed up. I ain’t movin. Agin, there the same tray.

OE 340 tray has round holes that line up and the MP tray has ovaled the hole to a slot for any engine.

I'm going to agree with almost everything Rumble said.
That being said I believe that there was actually three different windage trays. The 340 tray, the slotted tray and the third tray was a 360 tray that got dropped in favour of the slotted tray. I could be wrong but I doubt it.

As for the back problem I totally understand I was hit by a semi back in 1991. I have two herniated disc from that. And I'm not about to let them use a knife on them. That is what chiropractors are for.

Thanks. It’s been on going up and down. Reinjuring over and over. It’s just me and the heating pad. Drugs are fine when the pain isn’t blasting through them.

Your right. There’s 3 trays.

Same here on the reinjuring and heat pad.
Found the heated vibrating pads helps a lot. Then my sister gave me a vibrating massaging recliner. Now I don't need the chiropractor so much.
Just lifting 5 gallons of gas or a cylinder-head can knock it out again. Other times I can carry around a 727 and stuff like that with no problem. I gave up on pain pills a long time ago. Didn't like the side affects. But who doesn't like morphine. lol

Yea! Ain’t that somethin?! Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad. Walking is ok for 10 minutes and then it just starts to suck slowly, But surely.
I’m just taking ibuprofen’s and/or Aleve.

Diclofenac helps my back huge. That and percs lol. Diclofenac is an anti inflammatory and made a HUGE difference lessening the pain. I've 2 different windage trays accessible, if you want pics/specs?
