Shop Heat

-
We'll I got the model number and a compressor nis gonna be about $800. Doesn't seem worth it. I'm gonna try and call the LP company and see what they can offer.

Propane is the way to go like512 said by your propane in the summer I run a mr.heater hanging shop heater works well if I had it to do over I would have run pex. Piping in the floor and used a LP continuous water heater to heat the floor that is nice heat. good luck. KB9GIB

Can traditional gas furnaces be converted into propane?

My father in law has a whole system that got removed from a house but it's gas.

Think about a propane radiant tube heater... they work good, are pretty easy on fuel and are simple as heck.

Actually "it's not" that easy. If a burner is old enough, you won't be able to get the orifices, and you also have to change the spring in the gas valve, and again if the valve is old enough, you won't get that, either.

If that is the case, the furnace is old enough for me not to use it.....why would someone install a 20+ year old furnace, without checking it out first?

I'm not sure how old it is. Other came out of a house, but not sure the details. I am going to try and figure that all out this weekend.

@plumkrazze70, Yes, excellent take your furnace #'s to a dealer and "they" will tell you if indeed what it will take to make the adjustments.....

oh ya,I have another shop that's not well insulated and those torpedo heaters work really nicely if the fumes don't bother you.I don't have a problem with them, but a lot of people cant handle the fumes.
Use jet fuel....burns hot with zero fumes

Not true. I get instantly ill from jet fuel exhaust.
Anything that burns a fossil fuel releases toxic fumes.
I happen to have a very low tolerance.

Buddy of mine has a slick one. A hot air furnace from a mobile home. Sips fuel blows only hot air. He uses a fuel tank from a trick to feed it. Looking for one around here to use next year.

I use a propane torpedo heater and it works pretty good, but I have always been worried about gas fumes, solvents, spray paint & such.
I turn it off before and awhile after I use stuff like that. Any I being too paranoid, or Is there a solution that is safe? I have noticed that some shops have high mounted gas furnaces.

I would investigate a Modine LP powdered heater . My fire department uses them in their EMT garage . You may be able to score one used . Don't forget to get a co detector . In my state a wood stove in a garage is a no-no . check your insurance company before installing one .

I've checked around and propane isn't gonna happen. It's over $3.00 a gallon delivered. And only about $2.50 in them off season. I can take my tank and have them refilled at a station for about $2.05 sometimes, but then the hassle of having to lug the big tank around.

I pulled the trigger on a electric 7500w ceiling heater. I have the 220 already. I also insulated the ceiling with R30 and installed two ceiling fans. Should be fairly comfortable now.

Forced oil furnace is what I've been looking at. You can get them almost free used in working condition from people doing natural gas furnace upgrades. Then have an hvac shop bend up some ducting that comes off the unit and has two directional arms that blow heat. A 250 gallon tank outside, a small exhaust vent and done. The HVAC guy I talked to about it said its probably the most efficient and affordable option for a shop. Said $500 would get all the filter ducting and heat discharge tubes built.

Yea, but then ya got to fill it with oil...

Yep. My house is a forced oil furnace. I offered to upgrade it to a natural gas furnace so I could use it in my shop. My wife said no way no how, no better warmer hear than oil. Even the guys bidding our a/c upgrade that ties in said if we swapped over to a heat pump or other source we wouldn't be happy with the comparison. Literally nothing burns hotter. The air coming out of the vent is like 130 where heat pump is 95 degrees. Both warm the house. But none as well as the oil. Plus anything less than 35 degrees the heat pump sucks. Natural gas is the only thing even close. I'll pay the bill for oil, happily. In my house or my shop.

I hear my garage all winter, while I am out in it working.
I have two heaters in it, both propane, using the small 20lb gas grill bottles.
One is a torpedo that I use to take the coldness off when it is below 20f effective but noisy.
The second is my favorite it’s a vent free wall heater made by ReddyHeater it was about $200 at Home Depot, right now it is 78 degrees in here, just using the wall mount, it makes no noise or fumes. It will burn about tank of propane a week if it is super cold out.
So it runs me $14 a week to keep myself warm.

I have two propane jet heaters. I fire one up 45 minutes before I go out and work on the car. Then aim it towards my general area, even with two going it gets semi warm. Definitely great for spot heating. I need to get the spray insulation on and once the concrete is done hook up an oil furnace and work year round in a t-shirt. Lol. Hopefully.

pellet stove clean it once a year easy on the pocket book. and you have heat when you need it. My building in northern mn uses fuel oil furnance out of my house when we converted to propane due to the expense of oil. but even when it is -40 it is still 10 degress in the shop but once again the cost of the oil here if 3.32 a gallon( heats it up nice and quick lots of BTUs) and thats why im leaning towards a pellet stove < $3.00 a bag buy a pellet full of pellets last all winter. But if your temp where your at is not as extreme as northern mn iwould not get a torpedo i used one and its ok but noisy and the smell when you kick them on.

I finally sold my old Sears 140k "bullet" to a local contractor a couple days ago cheap. It worked great except it was a little loud and would smell a bit on shutdown. Kerosene just under $4 a gallon bulk around here. Was just way too big for my "spacious" 19 X 20 garage in heat and size.

...….I pulled the trigger on a electric 7500w ceiling heater...…..

Which heater did you get? I did the Fahrenheat 7500 several years ago.
