is there a difference between the 67 340 and later 340s? Other than the cam differences between manual and auto cars in 68. Is the 67 casting different? Better?.

The 1968 model year was the first year for the 340.

The '68 model year started during the 1967 calendar year though, so your block may have come in a '68.

Late '71 and onward 340's had lower compression pistons along with changing from forged to cast crank and adding external balance weight front and rear. Timing covers and waters pumps changed on all SBM's in 1970. Some smaller variations in inside parts IIRC for the early 340's.....

AFAIK mechanically, the 68 to 70/71 model year 340s were all same short blocks (exc the one year only manual-trans cams, as you noted), and all had 2.02intake valve heads. Covers and such changed in 70, and intakes/carbs in 71. The 2.02s were dropped to 1.88 I think 72, Compression was dropped I think in 73 and those low-C engines had different guts.
Slow-typer again,lol.

Casing is dated late 67 for a 68 car I am sure. But supposedly the 67 castings are more desirable. Trying to find out why or is it a myth?

More desirable for what. lol
I got one here I'll let you have for $17,000. lol. I desire your hard earned cash. I might have a second one, but that one will be worth more on account of if you buy the first, it is suddenly worth infinitely more, as it might be the last available one on the face of the Earth..
Ohhhhhh, chit! I just checked, and it's dated Feb-68, so sorry, lol; there go my dreams.:poke:

Lower compression pistons happened in 72 with the 1.88 intakes. 72 could have forged or cast crank. Other than electronic ignition, the 72 and 73 340's were pretty much the same as the earlier 340's.

I've heard the main webs are thicker on the 67 castings. If you have anything of value to add I'd like to hear it. If not kindly don't respond..

you forgot the 70 aar and T/A blocks have filled oil pan rails, maybe more that I don't know about.

A 340 block is a 340 block...

It's what you put into it and on it that makes the difference....

I have this info saved on the 70 340 TA blocks. Ignore the circled paragraph & read the info next to the blue arrow....

Yes, well we are not talking about T/A blocks now are we? I have had a couple, and obviously they are different for the 4-bolt mains. I have had every year of 340 4-bbl block manufactured from 67-73 and there is no difference.

The OP did ask about later 340's which would include T/A 340's would it not? That's what others have addressed in regards to T/A blocks.

Basic 340's no big deal between any of the Std 340 blocks.

The later 340 4 barrel blocks had a thickened rib running vertically thru the center soft plug. The early blocks didn't have that.

Is there a VIN number on the block? On the transmission rail behind the driver side head if it has one.

Are T/A block worth that much tho??? Just got this T/A 340 motor that was built and sitting for YEARSSSSS and it was never run and still has Assembly lube in her. Was .040 over but the block is in Perfect shape. Completely Forged

if you have an original aar or T/A body missing it's special oem block, they are probably pretty valuable. Even if it's not "numbers matching", it's probably valuable to complete the package.
