/6 running cool !?

I have a 1971 stock /6 with 145k on the clock. I does have a electronic ignition. my question is it is running at 160 to 170 on the street. I have put in a 190 thermostat. I have an AUX gauge mounted in the top side of the radiator its actually in the fluid not just a cheap probe. Has any one else ran in to this?
 
defective t-stat? Was it running too cool before the 190 t-stat. Did yout check the 190 t-stat on stove before you installed it? a quick temporary fix block off some of the rad with cardboard. Ambient temp has been unusually cool for the PNW.
 
I would put the gauge probe in the opening in the cylinder head. If still cold, take your thermostat out and see where it really opens with pot of water on the stove and a thermometer.

I did the cardboard block. No I didnt check it in the oven. I will do that to the next one.

Yup i always run 10 degress cooler, i put a 195 t stat in and run at 185,better than chasing an over heating issue all my slants run on the cool side if it really bugs you put the small original 4 blade. Remember too it is also winter time.
 
My slant in my 65 valiant wagon runs cool and the one in my 66 valiant convertible runs normal .i stopped worrying about it 10 years ago . It is what it is
 
When it's cold out especially, there is little flow in the rad, and it comes in dribs & drabs as the thermostat opens & closes slightly. The head is where You want the probe, the same area the factory temp sensor is. If that is well below the t-stat set point, You're either not generating enough heat to get there, or the t-stat is not seating/sealing.
 
Thank you Killer6, I neglected to mention the flow dynamic, and that the fluid transfers heat quickly through the Brass top tank in cold weather too and will immediately drop temperature quickly. Measuring coolant temp before it reaches the T-stat is the only way to have true reading.
