I had a machine shop bore my 400, install the pistons on the rods and deck the block. I bought KB Hypereutectic pistons, 9.3:1 compression ratio, and when I get them back, the valve reliefs were on the bottom, closer to the exhaust port, of the pistons. As long as the valve clearance is good, should it be a problem? They rebuild a lot of engines and I am wondering if they screwed up big time. It's been a while since I had it done and now trying to sell the engine. Any info would be helpful. I am adding pics to conversation to show the delima I am having. Isn't the even cylinders on the passenger side of the block and the odd on the drivers side?

Piston are installed wrong. Exhaust fly cuts and intake fly cuts are in the wrong place.
That's what I thought. Is it possible to flip them over and make them right or am I just screwed? I know some pistons have a certain direction to be installed. I see the arrow he drew on them.

You can put the pistons in right. Need to make sure the rods are on correctly also. No big deal. No harm . no foul. Just need to look at everything .

No because the rods will be wrong. Valve arrangement should be E I I E E I I E. Hell you paid the machinist, Make do it right.

It's been too long. I know they won't correct them. I am meaning can they be flipped on the rods they are on? That's what I am hoping.

I totally agree, I don't care how long it's been that ain't right and they'll know it. The minute you pointed out to them it's not like you took them out and turn them around and put them backwards or even ran the motor..

If he made that mistake, I would be worried about the rest. Rods are oriented drivers side vs pass side.
I would at least try to get them to fix.

If you swap 1 with 3, 5 with 7, 3 with 1, 7 with 5. The fly cuts will be right. Same with the even numbers.

The rods are on the journals they came off of. That's when I noticed it. I was moving to a new house a couple days after I got them back and went with it so I wouldn't have parts laying everywhere after I moved. I was also driving a truck so I was not home to do anything about them. Now years after, i don't have a Chrysler body to drop the engine in so I am trying to sell the engine, I am hoping they can be flipped on the rods they are on to make them right. I don't know if KB pistons have a certain direction they need ot be installed.

I will load it up and take it up there. They were supposed to be good. The fella must have been smoking crack that day.

I know my engine builder four years later now can just look up my name and get my build and re go over everything that was done at any time. Just called him the other day talking about some aluminum heads and he looked it up and told me everything that was done to it originally.

I will call them tomorrow. It's been a good while. Like someone said here earlier, it's not like I took them off and did it myself or ran the engine. Isn't the even # cylinders on the passenger side of the block on a Chrysler? Hell, I might have screwed up if that's the case.

Then you should have the pistons swapped to the correct rod arrangement. It is possible to swap holes with rod/piston assemblies on the same side. But why? you paid to have it done right.

Yes it does matter how the pistons and rods are installed. On all 4 corners cylinders the small valve relief on each piston in those positions needs to be to the outside because that's where the ex valves are located. The 4 center cylinders the small valve relief needs to go to the inside of the the cylinders thus once again that's where the center ex valves are.

even on passenger side, odd on drivers side.

I know the rods but I see he has an arrow drawn on the pistons like they have a certain direction they had to be installed on the rods. He might have thought the odd # cylinders were on the passenger side of the block and the evens #'s on the drivers side.

°^^I'd say listen to it Roy says. I just got my first big block the other day and I'm still figuring stuff out. But right is right and wrong is wrong and that ain't right ..

See if you changed banks for the pistons if the valve reliefs and squirt hole/anchor slot will be in the proper orientation... If you can't fix it by changing pistons from one bank to the other, then:

If the pistons have floating wrist pins, then you can fix it yourself... Just remove the wrist pin clip from one side of the piston and slide the wrist pin out...

The arrow on the top of the piston should point to the front of the engine, and the connecting rod squirt hole should point towards the middle of the engine (Towards the opposite cylinder) and the anchor slot on the rod for the bearings should be toward the outside of the engine block...

One bank will be the opposite of the other....

If the pistons have press fit wrist pins, then you need to take them back to the machine shop and have them fixed as I stated above... ^^^^^

you know these machine shops hire people and fire people and things like this happen and then when everything looks clean and neat it sometimes doesn't catch their eye. Bad quality control...
