Sorry I don't have pics ready. While in the process of restoring a 66 cuda Formula S I came across some things that seemed unusual.

First of all it is a late production of July 1966. It seems to have every factory option available.

It has a white vinyl top which means a lot of extra trim and the windshield rubber is different as it has an extra lip on top. How rare is a vinyl top on this car ?

The fender tag shows disc front brakes and 10 inch rear brakes. The car doesn't seem like it ever had discs or 10 inch rear. Does have disc brake master cylinder with extra reservoir on top.
I think it also has a ( anti-residual ? ) valve in the brake line before the proportioning valve. I'm not sure of the idler arm but believe it is different than on drum brakes but will work on either. How rare it is it for a disc brake car to come with 9 inch brakes all around ?

When removing the exhaust I noticed that the heat riser in the exhaust manifold was stuck almost closed. This seems like it was that way for a long time and had to been a lot of trouble for the owner. I doubt they knew it but intake was extremely gunked up.
This riser seems to be a dumb idea as I think a lot of people will not know when it malfunctions. Is this a common problem ?

When removing the valve springs I noticed that one was about 1/4 inch shorter. It was not broken off as the machining looked correct on both ends. I don't believe these spring were previously removed. It did not seem to effect anything. Has anyone ever come across a short spring that wasn't broken ?

The air cleaner on this car was correct for a CA car in every way except it was black and didn't seem to ever have been chrome. It was never re-painted and I don't know of any application that a black one would be used on. Has anyone else come across this ?

When removing the seats I was under the car and noticed that all 4 studs on both seats had a rubber tube over them. These had some red paint on them, same color as car. I've never seen anything like this buy figured out what they were when dis-assembling another car.
These were the bullet shaped plugs that were put in the threaded holes for the seat belts before painting.
I removed the carpet on a white color car and found a couple laying under the carpet. They had some white paint on them.
These are shaped like a bullet with a rounded end and a flat end. They have a hollow center and that is why they were able to be put on the seat studs in my red car. I'm thinking someone on the assembly line would have had to of done this. Maybe to make it safer to work under car ? Has anyone else ever seen this and are you familiar with these plugs ?

That's some of the stuff I can think of right now and sorry for the long post.

The black air cleaner lid was used in big block engines and were black, they were the same just not chrome... I’m sure somebody swapped it out.

Vinyl top is pretty rare and the windshield gasket is different too.

Never seen the rubber things...do you have any pics of these and the car? Sounds like a cool car!

Yeah, air cleaner could have been swapped out. Car just seems like it went down the line and they put on whatever they had. I'll try to get pics of the rubber plugs and of the car. Car is down to a body and was ready to paint before I filled up the shop. Ha.

I had the rubber tips on my 65 Formula S

Did you have the rubber plugs on the seat studs or did you find them under the carpet ? If they were on the seat studs I'm thinking they may have suppose to bet here.

I’ve seen a few with the “sash” vinyl top. Slant 6 cars also came with the black air cleaner lid. The 9” brakes sound like they got swapped out at some point. V8 cars came standard with 10” drums in 66.

It just looked like the 9 inch were on there from the beginning. I've heard that some might have switched brakes because they didn't like the discs, as they were fairly new, but I doubt they would have switched the rear 10 inch for 9s.

Lord only knows what happened on the assembly line especially towards the end of the production year with a whole new Barracuda model coming soon. When was your car built?

My car was built July 18. That was the 3rd week of July according to the calendar. I've heard that they started to switch around the 3rd week.

Extremely late. The cut off is usually July 15 and the first day of the new production year is August 1. I would imagine it is a high vin number.

It almost sounds like something they would do at the beginning of the year as a pilot car. (a car with all options) It must have a loaded fender tag. Are you lucky enough to have a build sheet?

Yeah. I’d love to see the fender tag. It’s gotta be LOADED!

I have a partial build sheet. My shop is in the process of being cleaned out as I am putting up another building. I will look at my title though and get the VIN . I should also be able to get to the fender tag as I believe it is on the car because it should be when ready to paint. It shows as a Formula S,disc brakes and is stamped out as I recall, that i believe is the vinyl top inspection.
It could possibly be the last,or one of the last, big window barracudas built. I'm trying to recall if there weren't other things. I believe the washer pump was a 67 model.

Yes it could very well be a "clean house" car. It could have been ordered with disc brakes and they were out when it came down the line. Heck the car before yours or the one after could have got your brakes.

Yeah, it didn't look like they were ever switched but that can't be said for sure. The fact that the 10 inch weren't on the rear leads me to believe what you suggested.

If it is a California car, it probably has the Clean Air Package, explaining the black air cleaner on the Commando engine. The 9 inch brakes all around with the disk brake master is odd, but possible. Weird things happen on the assembly line.

The vinyl top on the car is a rare option, not many had that. Whats the 7th digit of the VIN? If its a 5, the car was made in the Los Angeles assembly plant, confirming the mandatory Clean Air Package.

I would love to see a clear photo of the fender tag.

Yes car is definitely a CA car and does have the CAP. I thought that I've seen CA Commando engines with CAP and chrome air cleaners though. I haven't been able to find where this exact black air cleaner was used on big block cars. That doesn't mean it hasn't but I haven't seen that.

We have had discussions about the black unsilenced air cleaners being on HP 273's. They apparently were used.

My dad’s 66 has this chrome Commando air cleaner with the CAP option and it’s also on the build sheet.

Some pics I found, one is a 66 Cuda...this black air cleaner also came on 65 Body cars on the 4bbl engines...

Swapping the brakes for 9” would entail a spindle change up front and a backing plate change in the rearend, neither of which is an easy job to do just to grab the disc and 10” rear brakes. I think it may be a trash can car, just throwing on what was lying around. Certainly not a sold car.
