Chrysler /6 performance book dutra

-
The Dutra book is very worthwhile for any slant lover having all his info in a book is great. I did not know if an be ordered direct from Dutra or not.

You make more power modifying, but the return is never worth more than the novelty of it....hell, a 225 Crankshaft weighs 85 lbs for christs sake.
People are still rodding flat heads.....Its just a niche motor that people love for all its negatives.

Waiting on mine. I pre-ordered last year when it was first posted. Pre-ordered immediately after I saw the post.

Makes me wonder IF they are trying to get enough early orders to go ahead and send it to the printer!!!! I refuse to pay Amazon for a monthly membership as I order very little from them. I also hate to pay them $9 for cheap book postage rate! I will order the book IF I see it will go into print though! Maybe not thru Amazon.
Like Pishta said, the slant is a nitch engine just like the old flathead, but yes there are many people devoted to hotrodding the flathead!

I'm sure by the time I completely forget that I even ordered it. That's when it will show up. Like a surprise birthday gift. Lol.

Just a thought , how about a cnc program for a slant head ? that would be cool .
Howard Davis made a billet head, for His "Hillside Six" drag car. Don't recall if He has a program for that, but that's a race only item.

Why hasn’t anyone cast them out of aluminum. Like reverse engineering it? I’m saying this knowing little to, safer to say none about foundry work. But, if we can land on the moon? A slanty aluminum head surely can’t be that hard or that expensive? Just a thought. I would buy one as long as it wasn’t over the top expensive.

Because an aluminum slant head copy will be just a lightweight slant head. If someone makes an all new cross flow casting, then we'd be onto something. Only trouble there is, since the engine favors the passenger side, WHERE would the exhaust go? Remove the passenger's side fender well? As the head is, there is literally very little room for improvement leaving it a non cross flow design.

Thanks for the explanation. I understand, but there would be weight and heat advantages, as well as possibility for making improvements for intake, and exhaust flow. I’m saying for a street car, not racing applications. It just seems like for mild upgrades it would be beneficial overall. But again maybe I should keep my trap shut, cause I definitely don’t know enough to be trying to sound like an expert.

The biggest problem is, the slant six head was designed around one engine. The 170. So, you have a 170 flowing head on a 225. I am not an expert either, but that's a lot to overcome. Even starting a new head from scratch, I am not sure a designer could make it worthwhile with all the costs involved even for a mild street head. I wonder what it would cost to design and build? Then put a reasonable enough price on it that they would actually sell. From my very recent discussion with a pretty renowned porter on this site, the slant head is very thin in a couple of key areas already. I don't know if there's enough room to "move things around" enough to really make a difference big enough to justify it.

I'm not tryin to kill it, I'd love to see it. Problem is, I don't think anybody with a normal income could afford one. lol

:lol:True.! I was just wondering if trying to make a cast from an iron head and trying to make improvements on the cast.? Nothing radical, just improve. And get the extra benefits of just being aluminum. If I had more money then sense I would go for it. We need Doug to make it happen.!

Gentlemen!
I received an email from CarTech saying the slant book has shipped!
No doubt it will take a while to get to Australia, but you guys should get a present in the mail shortly.

Well kinda the point I was trying to make is, who in the world would grab the project only to make "small" or "moderate" improvements? All that $$$$ for R&D and everything else for something that flows a little over 200 CFM? Now, 250 plus, I might could endorse.

Was the Aussie "slant hemi" based on the US 225 block with their Aussie hemi head? Just wondering. I know it very ran well!

No.
First it was not a slant, nor a "hemi". Was straight up, and more of a "twisted wedge". Second I don't think anything interchanges with the slant six.
I think I read somewhere the oil pump gear or the distributor gear would interchange, but don't know for sure.

There won't be an aluminum head, becase nobody wants to put up the $70,000 to $100,00 to pay a foundry to do a run. Once a run is done, there may be less the 20 people that will actually pay the $2,000 plus cost for such a head.

Improved design. There is a head from Argentina formula cars floating around the Midwest. Big valves, big ports and heart shaped combustion chamber. Mr Dutra himself is rumored to have designed a head. But nothing will happen until the above is resolved.

There are several threads over on slantsix.org on this topic. Maybe you need to revive one.

I agree with th economics of it all as kesteb just said. The slant is what it is. It can be made to run as a NA pure race engine, as proved in Missouri, but most slant guys want a dual purpose car. It is what it is.
