Ok, so I dropped my car (68 dart 340/4spd.) over the Eng. , 4-speed. bolted to suspension. Now I have to pull the motor. Should I pull just the motor and leave the bell housing & trans behind or try and pull out together? Or, lift the car off the assembly again. Lastly, pull the gearbox then the Engine with bell housing attached?
Thanks

It would be a matter of preference. Motor/trans should come out the top but i guess it all depends on what you think is easier. I have a shop crane and k-member has never been out of my car as far as i know.

I have done it both ways, removed engine and trans together and engine only. Lining the engine and trans on reassembly can be difficult with the trans and bell housing still in the car, but can be done.

Going to put the engine back on a stand? If so, you'll need to separate them eventually. Then bolt back together in the floor? You've already been there done that.
You could thread a draw strap around the torsion bars to cradle the bell housing and trans. It will shift around a little too which helps realign.

I like the strap idea. I do have a cradle I made up that I can support the gear case as well. It's going back on the stand. I just don't want to get into re-alignment and torsion bars adjustments again if I can avoid it.

I've done every which way, but I won't be doing it engine-out-the-bottom anymore.
I made a snazy engine tilter, that bolts onto the intake in place of the carb, and allows engine and trans to come out together. This makes it so easy. And with the engine hanging, I get to push the car out of the bay, giving me lots of work space.
Car on a 4-post lift, my record is 17 minutes, to drop the exhaust, driveshaft, shifter, GearVendor od, and A833. A couple more minutes gets the bell off. Now yur just minutes from pulling the engine.

Mine is auto, but that is exactly what I did. A jack/ wood block under the trans helps to move around/ align

i call bulls... motor mounts, rad hoses, heater hoses, radiator, wiring, distributor etc...if i'm wrong i apologize, but, come on

LOL I think it would be possible, I've done it enough times now I might be able to get close to that if I had the inclination to do it fast. But I'm the type of person who likes to take it slow, pulling an engine is a fun way to spend an afternoon if you know what I mean.

I didn't say two minutes or a couple or a few.
But if I can't get the rest ready to pull in say 60 minutes, I have drunk too much beer, or my gut is getting in the way, or I just need to better organize my tools, lol. Course the last time I pulled it was 2004,lol.
Here's a tip; don't use HH header fasteners, those are serious time consumers. Once the headers are unbolted..... yur just minutes from pulling the engine, lol.

For me, pulling stuff used to always be a speed contest. I no longer find any pleasure in pulling engines.

:canada:i hear ya, i bet in 2004 i could do almost everything faster, im in the same boat as MOPEkidD-3, take my time, drink some(lots) of beer and it gets done. i dont have the luxury of a lift, that would certainly help

I take my time. I got everything unbolted on the top side , Radiator out as well ,console upper shifter bolt, carb, dizzy, wiring ect: in about 1 1/2 hours. Just got to raise it up and unbolt Exhaust pipes, driveshaft, speedo cable/shifter and linkage and Cross member, starter wiring.Just waiting for my load leveler from Home depot. Yup HD.
I love the Max one but I'm poor lol. Check the price.

I and one guy R&R'd a clutch in the service area (pits) of a rally in north GA in <50 minutes. Included the time to pull the tools, jack up the car, R&R driveshaft, trans, bellhousing and p-plate, pull & re-attach/adjust shifter/linkage, align clutch (by eye.. yes, I am that good at it...), re-fill fluid, drop car, everything.... literally 48-49 minutes from pulling in to driving out. We knew the car that well.... so I won't call bull on some pretty short times..... with the tools and experience, you can do some pretty quick stuff.

That was the spring I tried to run synthetic in the trans. That trans was out and in about 5 times in two weeks, for modding. It wasn't having the synthetic no-how. In the end I slick-shifted second and third, and put 50/50 in it, and badaboom; shifts like lightning even at 7200. Just try to find a break in the blackies, lol. The trans, by this time, was all aluminum except the front retainer, with the Passon Aluminum case and sidecover, and the aluminum GV adapter; so it weighed less than 100 pounds with fluid in it. The 17 minutes was on a 4-poster with all the tools pre-selected and still on the cart from the previous pull. It was a Saturday morning.I think that mightabin 2004/2005. I was probably 51/52 years old, and strong as heck; That trans was nothing to throw back up; course I cheated a bit with a pair of line-up pins.

<50 minutes for a clutch, on the ground, even for two guys, and without airtools; that's flippin'....... Fast!
My hats off to you guys.

I had one like that at one time. I had to trim the bottom of the L portion that bolts to the head off. The parts that stick out was crashing into the fire wall. It also can be a tight fit if you are putting the bolts on the back of the heads.

I built one similar to that
except instead of chains, I fabbed a flat plate to bolt to the carb-pad. It allows cranking to a much more vertical engine orientation like with the trans still bolted up, and the assembly doesn't dance around as much. Then once out and up high enough, I can screw it level and push the car back. So, I don't need a shop-crane, just a big cross-beam over the rafters. Yes I take the hood off, always.
But I just gotta say; that price seems ridiculously "affordable". I probably got double to three times that in parts alone to make mine.

We were young and hyped up in 'racing mode'.... and we had a 45 minutes service window to beat! I think we took 2 minutes of penalty time....

And then there was the time with the header repair in the UP of Michigan.... LOL

Guess I should of taken a pic but it took about 2 more hours and waiting for a couple of buddy's to come help get the hood off. Came right out and adjustable sling worked great. Now to make some side money to pay for what's to come.

I will drop mine out the bottom same as install. To much to risk screwing up the body IMO. I still see a little wrinkle in my core support from using the hoist too many times before I learned the bottom trick!
