Starting a BB Duster project

Weren`t they using a sbc for a test engine ? Torqueless little bastards unless u get into a bigger one. Our bigblocks probly handle the fan better, due to more torque to start with. I cant see 30 h.p. in a fan either, maybe 15 at the most on a small block. ???????
Horsepower is horsepower no matter what motor it’s on. I don’t believe a fan is going to draw anywhere near 30 hp, but whatever it draws it would be the same on whatever engine you have it on.

Been working on mocking up the EFI engine with a mechanical water pump. I think I have it all sorted out now but it did require some invention.

Trick number one is that I'm using one of my new small diameter 36-1 trigger wheels that is bolted to the back side of a Doty pulley. That leaves the pulley in the stock location and the smaller trigger wheel fits under the factory water pump housing.

Trick number two is a low mount 60 amp Denso alternator. I can go with a low mount since it is EFI so there isn't a mechanical fuel pump. With the fuel pump gone I was able to move the alternator down and in so it fits nice and tight. That makes a nice package in a big block A body car.

Moving the alternator down also opens up a nice window to see the timing mark on the damper. I also developed a bracket for the Holley crank trigger sensor and mounted it on the billet timing cover.

I got the radiator back from the shop. They took it apart and rodded it out and fixed some issues for me. Also moved the lower outlet over to the correct place so the hose would work. In this picture I'm using a factory fan clutch with a factory 20 inch fan. I'll probably drop down to a 19 inch fan just to provide some more clearance but this combo all works. Cordoba big block radiator (27 inch core) with shroud and a big block fan clutch. Just like the factory would've done.

Still don't think it will hurt one that much , that has twice the torque of most sbc !

The best way to test fans would be to use an electric motor to spin the fan and measure the current required. That will tell you the power consumed without having to use a dyno. An engine dyno isn't a very good tool for measuring small power differences, it is more of a gross measurement tool. Kind of like a yardstick. There are lots and lots of things that can change from pull to pull which is why an engine dyno can have problems measuring this kind of stuff.

745.7 watts = 1 hp. :)

The 512 inch engine is just about ready to head to the dyno for initial tuning. I figure it will make 575 hp and 600 ft-lbs. Should have it running on the dyno in a couple of weeks.

Like all ur stuff , kick a$$ !
I RUN A SINGLE WIRE 135 AMP ALTERNATOR DOWN LOW LIKE URS, THE LONG HEAD BOLT ACTULLY GOES THRU THE MOTOR PLATE----
Dam caps button !

Thanks Bob, the Duster is getting closer to being finished. I need to get some parts finished (painted, plated, power coated, etc.) and then it is time to start putting it back together.

Hey Andy, I think I found my problem, other than spinning into second gear, long story short " reversion."
Sometimes I overlook the smallest dumbest things !

Andy, the painted valve covers that u have the coils mounted on , are they the same as the polished ones from Summit racing ?
If so, are they taller than reg. mopar performance / finned covers ?

Those are billet covers I had built for the project. I couldn't find anything that worked for what I wanted to do so I had some custom built.

Got the Weld S71 wheels mounted up front. They clear the Viper brake setup just fine.

Just finished running the engine on the dyno. It made 600 hp and 580 torque. That should make the Duster plenty peppy.

Not quite. Torque is the determining factor on engine load, not hp (even though yes, they're closely related). That's why a truck with 300hp would probably have no trouble towing a 3-ton trailer, when you definitely wouldnt try to tow that trailer with a 300hp civic.

An engine with higher torque is always going to handle more load than an engine with lower torque but comparable hp.
