Slant 6 Alternator Bracket Leak

Ok, the ice has melted and I pushed my 64 Dart GT halfway out of the garage and I have the charger attached to the battery. Now, after reading Doug Dutra's new book, I discovered an oil leak where the alternator mounts attach to the engine. Therefore, my mechanic whom installed the remanufactured engine also did not know that the bolts need some type of sealant to keep that area from leaking oil. Is teflon tape appropriate for this job? And, do I need to completely remove the alternator to do this?

I wouldn't use Teflon tape. That's for tapered pipe threads. You can use the thread sealant referred to above, or what I use is red high temp RTV. Works very well. But they do need something.
 
Doesn't it say what to use in the book? I would go with RRR silicone, also permatex thread sealer that was also suggested.

No the new Dutra book, page 117, does not indicate what sealer to use. That is why I asked the question.
 
I have used both liquid Teflon and silicon sealer. It doesn't really matter what kind of sealer you use there. It isn't really a critical place, just somewhere prone to leaking.
 
I made the repair this morning and I was able to perform the task without removing the alternator. It was so easy even a caveman can do it.
 
The Permatex thread sealer should work. I have used Permatex gasket sealant which is a sticky purple liquid. It stays flexible and cleans up easy w/ ethanol. Use it so often I keep a can on my work table.

Yes, the Permatex worked very well, no more leaking, I am very happy with the product. I am happy I found the leak problem in the new Doug Dutra book. I am learning more than I expected by reading through his chapters.
 
Nice Dart GT Nigel, what rims and tires are you using? Here are some pictures of mine with my boys cleaning her up after the distributor install.

Great car, that looks awesome! I toyed with running deep dish black rims, unfortunately (or fortunately, depand how you see it) the rims I had lying around were factory 14" x 6" Hemi Pacer Track Pack rims, holy grail of car parts, so I wasn't going to get those cut and widened, no sir!

Here's a 'car wash picture" of my own, plus a couple of others. I've fitted all the chrome strips back on the bonnet since these photos.

The wheels in the photo are Australian-made Aunger "Hustler", date-stamped 1967 so they could be period correct for the car, but who cares, I reckon these are the best looking wheel ever on these and Valiants from same era... Similar to ROH "El Camino". The rims are 14" x 7" with 4" backspace, and correct 4"PCD. I think keeping early bolt pattern adds value to a car thats basically authentic, with a few 'period mods' like disc brakes. The tyres are 225/65/14. Hope that helps...
