Correct, H code is 340. It will be in the vin number on the dash. The fender tag will have E55 if its a 340. E44 for 318.

So, I just texted the guy "Hey, could I please get the VIN number and the number on the side of the engine?" Do you think that is all I need?

That's why I did that with my Valiant! I wanted to DRIVE a Mopar again. I have it back down now putting one section of the rear floor pan in, but it won't be down long.
Don't forget the Slant six timing gear...

I think I'm going to wear this picture out on you...

when you're traveling most people understand that you need things verified so you're not wasting your time. I tell people straightforward that if it's not a 340 I'm going to be seriously pissed or whatever your question Maybe traveling that far and bringing your cash. I usually would drive up with my wife and if I like it that much I go get a U-Haul truck and a car trailer load it up and bring it home. You can rent them for a one way trip...

So, the VIN Number, Fender Tag, the number on the side of the engine, and the slant six timing gear (whatever that is. I'll have to search how to figure that one out.)

He's just harassing Rusty Rad Rod on the slant six timing gear, don't ask the seller about that!! :poke:

the slant six timing gear was a reference to rustys thread on getting his valiant going, i think, not something you need to worry about

well the slant 6 timing gear LOL LOL LOL is something rusty Rat Rod will have to tell you about but it has nothing to do with the car you're going to buy I hope..

Rusty Rat Rod is an old hat at this forum and has finally got himself a Mopar again and has some Mopar fever and it's coming out in the form of a slant 6 timing gear LOL...

You guys sure know how to take the fun out of stuff! LOL I remember when I worked at a golf course in Florida in the maintenance department. Every time a new guy would come and start I would always have him go to the pro shop and ask for the flag so he could hoist it up for the day...

If you ask the owner about a slant 6 timing gear you're going to look like a bigger doof than Rusty Rat Rod LOL..

Remember these are our hobby cars and we like to have fun sometimes it's not always serious but I understand it's serious for you at the moment..

Hahaha ohhhhh ok. Gotcha :D I have so much learning to do! But I'm excited to do so. VIN number, number on the engine, and the fender tags. I hope the guy is willing to do all of that but you're right, I don't want to waste a trip. It is only an hour though

Yes, I just really want to know what I'm buying. I'll be going alone and not feeling very confident. At the moment, I'm thinking I'll be looking up all these numbers somehow on my cellphone or something

I just Googled Mopar block casting numbers. There's a block with the cast number for a 360. Get yourself familiar with this kind of stuff. Someone showing a 318 or something like that for 340 price that stuff needs to be checked. Don't wear clean fancy clothes be ready to Roll On The Ground underneath that stuff. remember on the driver side above the starter underneath the exhaust manifold you're going to have to get under there. Turn the flash on your phone and take a couple pictures and look at them and blow them up. bring a rag and a screwdriver if you have to get up there and scrape a little bit if it's oily or greasy which it shouldn't be. The motor looks pretty clean.

Remember mechanically anything can be fixed a lot of the value is going to be in how solid the body is. Inside the trunk around the rear fenders behind the wheels up underneath the frame and stuff like that you really want to inspect under the car really good. If you got a solid frame to work with you can buy parts can make it what you want these things aren't getting any cheaper unfortunately $5, 000 for v8 car that's pretty straight and rust free is pretty reasonable now. Make sure it has a clean title..

Ya, I highly doubt the guy is going to get under the car and check the engine block number. He said the engine and trans are both original but I’ll for sure double check. He also said the title was good. I guess I’ll be driving the hour there! Hopefully it will be worth it. I just don’t want to get my hopes up :/

At 5K and the body is decent and it appears it is, and has a drive train running or not. I would buy it in a heart beat. You will not find one that cheap, that is a pretty fair price. Many of us on here are old and we have kittens paying 5K for a non running car but the simple fact is it is not really what it is worth but what the market will bear. And it will not last long at that price running or not.

Good point! So it being a 340 or not I should still buy it if it’s running.

And what is a kitten??? I keep seeing that word thrown around lol

Welcome...

The car looks fantastic.

Wish I was in Texas... I would go with you.

Perhaps there is another member in TX who can go with you?

That's a nice looking car for $5 grand. If you're taking cash, I suggest you not go alone. Too many scammers and such out there. That decal I think was only optional on '71 Dusters, but easily gotten. I have one on my '73 Dart Sport.
