Went to Muncie Dragway the 13th of April. Ran a new personal best of 15.06 in the 1/4 mile with my 318 72 duster.60 foot times suck (226).I made it to quarter finals but just want to hit 14.99...Oh well a good day!

Nice you got a new best first time out for the season.

What’s done to the car/what’s the combo?

It's a 68 318 with stock bottom end.J heads with 1.88 intakes and 1.60 exhausts. Edelbrock 600 and performer intake.727 transmission and 3.55 suregrip. The cam is 268/272 duration and 0430/0450 lift.T/converter and cam are my mistake I think.Should be faster.

What did you do so you didn’t lose a bunch of compression with the head swap?

Is it spinning, or is a 2.0+ 60’ all it’s got?

Very cool! I'm hoping to make it back to Muncie sometime this summer. I usually race there a couple times a year (almost a 2 hour drive for me).

what is the altitude of your track?

935 feet ...
I agree, should be low 14's. Headers? Keep tuning. Couple of quick questions.
  • what is your initial timing?
  • what is your total timing?
  • what rpm are you shifting at?
  • what is the mph?

I don’t have two cents to add in but only congrats on your new best and a warm whole heartedly well wish of happy E.T. hunting!

The best thing about FABO is about to pop up.
Helping hands to lower and quicken your car!

Just my 2 cents... Always tell the MPH! It will be a better gauge of whether the ET is close or not.

The whole timeslip is better yet.

Probably ran about 88-90 mph is my guess. With a 15.06, you are missing about .15 from the 60', should be in the 2.10 range. Get that sorted out and it will be running 14.70-80's.

90 with a strong 60' (2.05ish) is in the 14.70's

Keep tuning! My 72 Duster 318 goes 13.6 @ 99 with same heads and very similar cam.
New bests are always exciting. Funny how we get jacked up over a tenth or two!

Exactly why I asked for the mph. Tells the power the motor is making. RPM shift points too. Seen a lot of folks leave them in drive, and if the kickdown linkage isn't set properly, it may shift out at 3400 rpms instead of the 5400 rpms needed.

92.86 MPH

That’s plenty of speed for getting well into the 14’s.

Need to work on the 60’.

Time for a converter.

I say continue tuning. 2.26 is plenty of 60 ft to get into the 14's. That's what I cut with my 318 Duster and it runs 14's.

My advice is always the same, don't throw parts to compensate a problem. tune the problem out of the vehicle

I would love to hear some options.I don't want to use NO2

I think 68 318s were 9.2 Scr advertised engines to start with.
So the extra volume in this conversion might leave you with 8.0 Scr. Which at 4000 to 5500, doesn't add up to that much powerloss. But it usually does make the bottom end a lil soft with the factory TC.

92.86 is pretty fast for a 4bbl 318.
Congrats

Had your exact set up except the heads were shaved .050 and a isky mega 270 221 at .050 and .465 lift on a 108 lsa. Ran 14.0s at 101. I like 318s just a rering and bearings. Had a lot of fun with that engine. Car was 68 dart 3610 with me in it.

well, for a measuring stick, my 318 Duster has 2.76 gears, stock exhaust manifolds, stock converter, summit cam and I home ported the stock 318 smog heads. I have a 770 holley on top. Short block was never apart and it's a '76 motor. It runs 14's at 94 mph, with a 2.2 60 ft. Pretty similar build as yours, except you have better gears, and if you have headers, that's another plus for you. In other words, you should beat me every day of the week and twice on Sundays. That is why I suggested "tuning what you have" before throwing parts at it.

93mph is a low 14 range with a 2.0 60's is my guess.

You start busting the 13's with a 95ish MPH so you are getting there. If you got a complete timeslip, look for a site that has a comparative slip based on your. I think Wallace Racing has one. You can punch in 60' Time. Laong with 1/8, 1000' and 1320' ET and MPH. That will give you a gauge of where the car is strong or weak

Right off the bat, the first 330 is probably weak, so get it to launch especially 60'. Every .1 you take off there, you gain about .15-.2 at the finish line.

Move the timing a little, jetting, acc pumps/cams, different launch RPM's. Find what the car likes best.

Seen your car at Muncie real nice car, the car in my avatar I have raced at Muncie but has been repainted its original red maybe you seen it.My car had 3.21's and a 360 in it and a 3000 stahl converter and would 60 high 1.80's run 13.40's 13.50's in heat you do some tuning like everybody said car easily should get you in 14's.Hopefully we can meet up sometime.
