Oil pan questions

Hi everybody:

I was just wondering if it matters much if you have a baffled oil pan or not and are these after market ones as good as the factory ones. Some of them are pretty cheap price wise. I don't really want to take the pan off of the old 318 and use it for the 340 witch doesn't have one yet. Besides it looks like someone did the old put the jack under the engine bit at one time.

I look at it this way,... There was a reason that Chrysler put baffles and windage trays in their oil pans, at least on the more performance oriented engines. The baffles WILL help keep oil down in the sump of the pan for the pickup tube.

I bought the "402" pan for my 440 from Mancini Racing because my original had the corners knocked in a bit and it would have been hard to knock out the dents under the baffles. Price was reasonable and it fit on with no issues. I had to mess with the length of the pickup tube, but that is quite common.

If you are just cruising and no serious racing, then the stock ones will be fine.

buy a new one! and spend the money on a good one with baffles it's worth it

Someone said this and I don't remember who, but put a oil pan without baffles on the passenger seat floor put 4 qts of oil in it and have your ol lady hold it between her feet and drive around and try not to spill any on her shoes.

I like the kevko pan fits nice and doesnt sit to low. You need different pick up and way to mount tube so needs some things. M301 - 340M302 - 360Stock Location

re-read your own post - you've already answered the question - do not use the old pan and as stated in other posts, baffles are good.

If you're gonna spin that 340, then the oiling system needs all the help it can get. Get a hi-capacity one as deep as you dare, to get the oil away from the crank; foamy oil will take out your rod bearings in the blink of an eye.A skid-plate is a good idea.

I have to agree on the baffled/windage tray vote since you want a new pan for it anyway.
If you didn't need/want a new pan and you only ever drove the speed limit it wouldn't be necessary at all.
And for that comment about your old lady holding a pan with oil in it between her feet, it would have to be 180-200 degree oil for that to be a fair experiment.
