Why are people scared of the drag strip?

-
My son and his "group" are going to midnight Mayhem at the strip. He wants me to go. Not sure that I will. Last time it was clocks off racing, which I don't mind. Crowd was mostly the hackysack crowd, and some a little crude.

I drag raced at Moroso in FL years ago when I was young. It's too expensive. Drag racers have a lot of disposable income. I also don't have the time to pull engines out and repair stuff.
It cost thirty-five bucks to go to the test and tune. If you go to the dragstrip you're going to have to pull your engine out and repair stuff?
This sounds familiar....

Yes but here's the problem with that! That same guy is the one who floor boards it next to you on the side streets but is unwilling to go to the track to do it. Going over an uneven intersection with curves just feet from his tires and good Lord knows all the other dangers and to do it somewhere where it's completely safe scares him that he's going to "beat" on his car...??

Doesn`t want to know the truth !~!

Yeah I think that's a huge one for a lot of people who haven't done it before. They're looking stupid.
I guess when you're a pro at looking stupid like me, it's just par for the course...

Lay off for ten yrs. , go out in a new untested 8 yr. build , w/ 4 wheel disc brakes , "for the first time" , especially w/ more h.p. than u can hook up , on drag radials , instead of 14" slicks>-------ASK ME HOW I KNOW !
Maybe no one saw me !! LOL

Stuff breaks when you race. In any racing that's the case. I used to race motorcross. After so many races it's time to rebuild. That's with any racing. If you have a sponsor then they share the burden of cost. If you don't, you pay the big money and big time it takes. If that's your hobby then have a good time, but you have to respect that not everyone has the same skill level and dollar bills.

My race car dont see the strip beacuse the nearest one is about 2 hours away in a normal car maybe 3+ with my gears....

I'm not afraid to beat her like a rented mule tho.

At some point I'd like to launch on a prepped surface and see if I can get the wheels up tho!

Other than that I dont realy care, I know my car is quicker than just about anything on the street and she proves it any time someone wants to find out.

If people are scared then that's their loss. I went for the first time last year and had such a great time. I'll likely have an opportunity to hit a couple street legal nights this year, but if my Duster is broken, I'll race my truck! Truth is, they just dont know what they're missing!

I know my wife is. The other day we was talking about my car and when I get it finished how I want to take it to the Bristol 1/4 mile track they have a Saturday night street shootout race. Its run what you brung no rules single elimination type bracket racing. I think the only rule was it had to be tagged and titled. But anyway she was like I dont think that's a good idea what if you spend all this time and money and wreck it or blow it up or break something?
The only race she ever went to the track with me was a super 6 race it was cars faster than 6secs (1/8) and these cars were violent ! Several of them bounced of the walls and one actually wrecked into another car. So that's her idea of what drag racing is.

Is it because the common man watches drag racing on TV and they think their car is going to go up in a ball of flames? Do they realize they do not have an alcohol burning funny car? Do they realize that they have nowhere in the ballpark of that kind of power?
I think I've heard every excuse in the world. First off is I don't want to crash my car? Well who in the hell is telling you to drive into the wall? They see those High horsepower cars get out of control and go into the wall and for some reason they picture their car is being some kind of high horsepower out of control car? Or my favorite is I don't want to beat on my car. Yet when I rev my motor up next to them at a light they're more than willing to floorboard it over an intersection with curbs only a foot away from their tires with the possibility of cars turning right in front of them...
What is the picture that comes into the common man's head when it comes to going to the drag strip?
I mean people with Dyno sheets all this trick suspension super duper everything and you mentioned the track and they're like- what no way!!! I'm not going to crash my car! I'm not going to beat on my car! LOL...

Those that give excuses have either never been there, or have deep concerns about actually knowing how good or bad their car is. They thrive on dyno numbers and stories at shows and cruise nights. Basically they like the reality they can create, without having the added complication of actual fact to break that up.

Do just for the record the guys I talk to, definitely had thirty-five bucks to race, definitely had time to kill, and definitely didn't have some $50, 000 car to lose. None of them had the kind of horsepower that was going to put them into the wall not for a second and I wasn't asking them to race a whole season or beat on their car for the whole entire summer racing bracket class. I was just saying go down and take a few passes for one time in your car's entire life....

I started drag racing at Woodburn which was about an hour and 15 minutes honestly not as far as your talking, but I would just rent a $55 U-Haul trailer for the day. I pick it up when they were closing and drop it off when they were closing the next day. Nice thing is I could put it on the trailer the night before and have it ready to go in the morning.

It might not be that a lot of people are scared of the strip itself. Maybe they are afraid of breaking something that costs a lot.

Well I don't want to say she said everything my friends said LOL
when I talk to my friends I certainly let them know that they don't have to make some kind of all out pass the first time down the track. They can just leave at the line and take a normal Drive...
I think if there's anybody driving their car on the public highway that can survive a couple quarter mile passes are probably dangerous....

If I'm gonna drive my car that far it will end up parked in front of your house, full of old taco plates and empty red bull cans!

When that day comes be ready cuz after 1,000 miles my slicks will be hot and ready to go.

Okay so your new car, your new Slant six are you scared you're going to break something expensive?
Let's start with my first friend. An ASE Certified mechanic he put the LT1 in his lowrider. Now he was willing to go. Who really rather wait till he put his big motor in...
Another one just had a new motor and it's all broken and I rebuild the turbo 350 and we totally went through everything actually. That car I totally know would not be hurt by a few quarter mile passes. It probably only get up to about 90 miles an hour anyways which it should cruise at on the freeway....
The last guy has brother had the older Pontiac LeMans and already cut a hole in the head in anticipation for his blower motor. And that's when I'm supposed to see him at the track when he had something that he'll put into the wall with too much horsepower LOL...

I don't know about that guy or any other, but I'll tell you about ME and THIS particular situation.

I'm not building my car to blast......or slug down the strip. Though, it might happen. I AM going to build a pretty nasty N/A slant six complete with a solid roller camshaft and camshaft gear drive. So that also means to USE that camshaft, I'll need a nasty ported cylinder head with bigger valves. In other words, a lot of money spent......for ME. Honestly, the intent is to be a 100% street car. I just want to do the cam and gear drive to be "different". I don't want to break anything. Nobody "wants" to I guess, but some people are in better situations to recover. All I would do is remove the carnage and reinstall my 170 and keep on truckin. lol

That one time the exotic dancer turned out to be a dude...
Im not into drag strippers...

Exactly what I told her lol I said I would make some easy passes to get a feel of the track and the car. Then work my way up I basically want to go to the track for tuning trials anyway. I told her its alot safer to test on the track than backroads.

I don't own a car that I'm afraid of flooring for a few seconds. IF it's that tender, fragile and finicky, I won't own or I will fix it....

just like I said if your car can't make 1/4 Mile Pass it probably ain't safe for the regular Highway...

Anyone I ever meant that said they had a 10 second car but had never been to the track was very disappointed when they did. Most couldn't run a 13 flat. This includes me when I was young.

How many of you have insurance that would not cover you if you had a problem at the drag strip?
