My brand new radiator... destroyed.

Well this happened today. Had to sit around for 2 hours for the tow truck to show up but at least it was free (roadside service through Hagerty).

I put a cheap replacement motor mount (biscuit type) on the driver side when I installed this engine and now I'm paying for it! Guess I need to add a torque strap and some better mounts, definitely not spending the money on Poly-Loks or whatever though.

If anyone knows a decent biscuit motor mount for less than $50 let me know.

Yeah I'm pretty pissed. I just got done with classes yesterday, patiently waiting to do car stuff until I finished my exams and now my fun vehicle will be down for the next 2-4 weeks. Ahhhhhh such is life.
 
Poly-Loks are cheaper than a radiator! Add a good torque strap.

Not by much, this radiator was from ECP cost $219 plus shipping. I do see your point though.

@D G I thought about putting a solid mount on the driver side, how much will that increase vibrations into the car? It's mostly street-driven but the whole car shakes as it is from the choppy idle with this cam, can't really imagine it being much worse with one solid mount...?
 
It will shake some more I feel it in steering wheel. Or you could use threaded rod on driver side mount and strap it down to k frame would not cost much Weld a washer on end of rod

Really? As if that’s too much money to spend? If you got money? Like those of us that pressed the EZ button and spent a few dollars actually have millions? You need a new hobby.

Now that the picture is posted, anyone can copy this right?
 
I went out just now and looked at my engine bay, with my Saginaw pump and PS lines there isn't much room to add a torque strap. I'm going to try using one of those Moroso steel mounts on the driver side and see how that goes. I did search around the forum for threads about it and seems like most people who have used one or both solid mounts on the engine don't really have anything bad to say about them; some mentioned concerns about fatiguing the K-member but then there were a bunch of replies from people saying they've used them for years in several cars and never had an issue.

Saw one post about a guy who ripped a chunk out of his engine block but that was a low-9-second stick-shift drag car lol. I'd be happy if mine runs in the 13's.
 
That sucks! But, you've reminded me, and probably others on here, not to skimp on mounts.
 
I made my own torque strap. Get some chain, use about 1/2 link slack. Bolt on from battery ground strap on driver cylinder head, to K Frame, where you have to drill a bolt hole, mines been on their 20 plus years, works fine, and is a lot less money than that fancy doedad. You can't even see it.

Depends but I tried a few strap ideas but the schumacher torque strap ended the broken motor and transmission mounts. Any slack was too much slack but I'm sure that is not always the case.
Mike S suggested the solid strap as less vibration than their interlocked mounts. I think there's a couple other companies with interlocked biscuit mounts now available, so maybe another design would be a better insulator.
Agree you can make your own torque strap if you prefer to save a little money.
 
I just welded 1/8 plate right around my old driver side motor mount.
Cost me nothing but an hour of my time.

More vibrations?
I dont think much more? My car shakes the fenders at idle tho...
 
My dad used a piece of chain around brkt on motor and brkt on k member. A piece of cable in the same location as in post 11 would restrict movement but allow for vibration dampining.

For the record I had a 92 lumina transfer verse mounted v6. It had two upper motor mounts (torque struts ). The rubber isolators kept coming apart so I took some flat stock. Drilled a coupLe of holes and created solid mounts. The thing vibrated the car so much after 2 days I removed them. And just bought another set of isolated ones.
 
Damn, if had a nickel ($20 in today's inflation) for every time I saw one of my older brother's (I have 4 of them) engines strapped down with a chain around the frame and bolted to various places on the block, I'd be a rich man. Late 60's and early 70's. None of them gave a **** about it being pretty. :)
 
I think the reason we can get away with solid mounts in old Mopars is we're dealing with V8s which normally produce no vibrations when running, compared to say an inline-4 or some V6 engines.

I upgraded the motor mounts on my Jeep to the "Brown Dog" type, not solid but they hold the engine very tight and transmit more vibes. However since it's an inline-6 engine I don't feel anything inside except at start-up or if I accidentally lug it in high gear.
