I bough my ‘66 Barracuda about a month ago & everyone on here has been super helpful with all my rookie questions and issues, so I thought I’d throw this out there. The guy I bought the car from said the ‘71 318 that is in the car, puts out 400hp at motor, with “293 cam, domed pistons, 30 over”, and was built by nationally know Mopar engine builder Pat Cafferdy”, but had no paperwork to back it up. Has anyone ever heard of him? I put this name in the search bar, with no results. I might not have the name spelling correct, I just have to go with the text he sent me. He has told me several things about the car that have not turned out to be true, so I’m just wondering if this is another “fact” that doesn’t hold water. Thanks in advance.

Never heard of him and I come up empty with Google. 400 HP for a 318 is certainly possible, but that would be a very rowdy 318.

I approached your question from a little different angle. I searched for nationally known mopar engine builders. Several names came up but that was not one of them. Might I suggest to not get to wrapped around the axle in bragging rites of who did what to your ride. About the only time it seems important is when you are in the big boy circles trying to eek out top dollar in its sale. Enjoy the hell out of it. Make it yours and stick with hold my beer and watch this **** for the best stories. How about some pic's of your pride and joy.

I agree with this like a million and 2 halfs percent.

Knowing that your engine was built by a professional with good credential's, would be very good to know, no matter who's circle you run in. Especially if it is as radical as you say.

Maybe it was John Caffertyand the Beaver Brown Band...unless the Beaver was a blond or redhead.

If that 318 runs good just enjoy the heck out of it...go beat up on some Chevies.

My favorite bar band ever(not to change the subject )

318 doesn't have to be “ rowdy” to make 400.
The 318 in my old car made 477 with iron heads on pump gas.
248/248 solid cam.
I “ detuned” it ran a 231/238 solid cam, and it still ran mid 11’s at 3400 pounds not leaning on it. Shifted at 6k.
Some very slick machine work, but 10.4 compression, knockoff airgap intake and cheap 1 5/8 no name headers.

There is a nice magazine article about the build.
I ran the motor in my 71 Duster 4 seasons. Sold it to buy my dart 3 years ago
Google “ LA confidential Mopar”.... that was my motor

Plenty of guys in the Mopar community know me... i don't **** anybody

Uh huh......

Car ran 115 and change at 3400 pounds shifting it at 6k with a flat hood.
All steel bench seat interior car with a 325 pound driver( me) i ran it with a stock fan and water pump.
Dyno’ed with a remote water pump mounted.
If it didnt run like it looked like it should have at the competition, it sure wasn't far off.
It was my summer daily driver, why i put a smaller cam in it and didn't buzz it hard. 28 inch tire and 4.10 gear.
Plenty of guys saw me race it. I am a race sponsor at Monster Mopar at Norwalk. We sponsor the 11.50 index race

Pretty good article. My combo is pretty close to that. Were you not able to find a Milodon pick up for that pan?? I know they are like hens teeth.

Also, do you remember which lobes were on that cam?

I'm in the same boat. I think my car is in the 3400 pound range without my fat *** in it. I do have bigger headers and 4.56 gears. So I should be close to what you ran. If I can drive it.

Not sure on the lobes. Adney had somebody spec it. Nasty little camshaft though with the big ratio on the intake rockers. Still was streetable but i wasnt sold on the beehives lovin it on a daily basis
I ran a much milder piece in the car. Like with anything else that makes steam the heads were real good. Small, but worked really nicely on a small motor like that. 323 inches running 6k aint much lol.

Well, we're kinda gettin this guy's thread off track......I'd love to hear more about your motor. Would you make a thread about it?

I sold it and the car several years ago. Just posted about the motor because somebody said a 318 making power has to be gnarly.
Dont need a thread on it, its the past.... lol
