picked up a 340 long block w/out specs

You don't have to pull both heads, pull one and it will tell you what you need to know.......I'll get roasted for this but if it has not gone thru a thermal cycle prior to cracking it open, I'd reuse the head gasket

If the head gasket comes off whole without peeling, I wouldn’t have a problem with it. One thing about a blown small block. It really should have a set of head studs. If it was assembled with regular head bolts, I would be weary of the build.

What YR said works but use the alcohol not the solvent
alcohol absorbed water ACE hardware has 99% denatured I use to take heat sinks off cpus
Then WD-40 that's what WD-40 was made for- it's not really a lube

Come on people, we're talking about the price of a gasket set here to see what parts are there and in what condition. I mean seriously, that's the best option.

Yeah I don't know why anyone would do anything different in this particular case.

Like I said earlier, I might do it different if it was advertised as just a stock-ish rebuild and it looked the part. Check some casting numbers, maybe take a peak with a borescope. But in that case I'm assuming its a relatively low compression engine with cast parts and I'm not expecting anything. And even in that case, if I looked in there with a borescope and saw valve reliefs the heads are coming off, because now I know it's not just a stock rebuild with factory replacement stuff.

For an engine advertised as a supercharged race engine? I'm gonna check everything if I don't know the builder or the parts. Especially before I lay out dough for a supercharger. Even small discrepancies in the build could be catastrophic when the boost starts in.

Its settled, I shall crack her open!!! I'll post what I fond out this weekend! Thanks for all the great replies!!!
