How would you build a low 10’s street car

I’ve got a 68 340 barracuda with a 4 speed and 3.55 rear gear it’s got a cam just a touch above stock and x heads, also got an LD340 intake with carter 1406 afb carb basically a stock rig but also have the hi-po exhaust manifolds, I want to get this car into the 10’s and still be streetable, how would you guys go about this? I eventually may want to turn the car into a daily so if mpgs can be kept in mind with the aforementioned goal that would be a plus. I was thinking something along the line of turbos, overdrive and 2.91’s but I’m just spitballing and have no real knowledge of mechanics behind me

You will need to change pretty much your whole car. Low 10's takes some pretty serious stuff.

Was looking at the racers forum but figured the cars there were going to be dedicated racers, im trying to see if the goal of 10’s is possible while still being streetable and reliable

I'd focus on gaining the "knowledge of mechanics" because you'll need it for the car you own and for the car you want to build.
 
Ever since early 2000 (the first fast and the furious) the word "10 second car" rolls off people's lips like it's an everyday thing....
 
Get the Mopar Performance engine and suspension books. Build it by the recipes they have. Yeah, it's old school technology, but it STILL WORKS.
 
A low 10 sec street car is not only a very serious and expensive car to build you'll need the knowledge (or a real good friend) to service it. IMO a low to mid 11 sec car is more realistic especially if anything resembling ok fuel mileage is concerned. Mine 68 Cuda weighs 3640 with me in it and just breaks into the 11's but is a very mild 408 build. I feel the fuel mileage is good for what it is but rarely gets better than 13 and that's when I let the wife drive it
 
Shame on me for not reading your whole post. Turbo. Supercharger. Go for it. Remember, if you build the engine to go that fast the transmission,rear end, front and rear suspension, chassis all has to be upgraded to handle the speed and power.

I’m getting that I am going to need money resources and knowledge of mechanics so I’m handling the funds part of that and I have two die hard mopar mechanic buddies at the ready, I now stand corrected from my earlier thoughts because I was reading of 340 stockers doing 10’s in nhra races at the strip, advice on this build would still be appreciated if at all possible thankyou for the feedback so far

Yeah that’s why I was mainly thinking of a turbo build and I was thinking turbo over supercharger due to parasitic loss from running the super vs the turbo, I had stuff in mind but not really sure how it would work all together, I was thinking along the lines of a 340 with the x heads ported or just going with aluminum eddies and because it’d be a turbo engine I’d have to worry about detonation because my engine is currently running 10:5:1 compression, I was thinking a 2.91 gear for decent highway mileage, but also wanted to run a GVOD with my A833 I wanted to run the same compression I have that being 10:5:1 if possible so I’m not asking for power down low and waiting for the turbo to kick in or just go down to 9:5:1 if that’s the only way to go. I just don’t want the car to be a dog until the turbo gets into action.
 
Step 1. Get a large bucket.
Step 2. Fill bucket with cash.
Step 3. Throw said bucket at car.
Step4. Repeat for the rest of your life.

At 3600 pounds with driver you will need approximately 600 horsepower to run 10.50.
Now 600 big blocks that are street driven aren't a problem and the formula is easy and straight forward but a 600 hp small block is somthing else, hyper and temperamental come to mind.
And if you want reliability your 600 hp could cost you 9 to 14 k.

I measured a 67 Barracuda Formula S factory A/C car without the under hood A/C components except the condenser (with A/C HVAC still in) in college for a project and it weighed 2940 lbs.... Oh yeah, it also had a factory console shift...

A boosted car should be in the 8's for compression...

Turbos have a lag and will handicap you off the line... Superchargers don't have the lag...

a 2.91 gear in a 10 second car...

when I was in High School, every 350 camaro was 400 hp... LOL. Beat 'em with 318 2bbls though... :D
 
In all seriousness im building a new engine for my "street" car. It should make north of 600HP.
The only thing "street" about my car is that it has a license plate and insurance. Its not really legal for the street and its not really something you want to spend much time in.

The cost of the new engine will be WELL over 10 grand ( hell i got 5k sitting on top of the intake alone. ) and i get great deals on parts and labor. Not to mention how much i already have into the rest of the car. (It's A LOT)
The new engine will hopefully hold together for a full season. Thats about 2 or 3 hours of driving per month, probably less.

Just giving you and idea of how deep the watter is your thinking about steeping into....
