I have a couple of used oil pump shafts. Is there a way to tell if they have the hardened shaft?
Thanks FABO

Yes. Where it necks down to the hex that drives the oil pump. If it's a sharp 90* edge there, it's not hardened. If it smoothly transitions into the hex, it is. That's done to relieve that area of any sharp changes in shape to reduce the possibility of fracturing.

Running a good file over the area should give you a good idea if it has been hardened or not. If it is hard, the file won't cut.

Thanks guys, I have two in good shape but they are not hardened so probably not worth selling?

Free to advertise them. If somebody needs one and they're not running a high volume oil pump, then they might want it.

They make great primers as well, a quick cut and a weld and done

People may even want them for that

also, the hardened shafts have a roll pin holding the gear on, others do not! like you said, the transition is tapered on hard shafts.
