Leaning towards replacing my weak LA 360 with a crate 5.9 magnum ATK list theirs at 320 HP
but looks like they are using pretty much stock components - is that possible Looks like a pretty decent company anybody using this --Thanks

I thought they got magnums now, kinda hard to tell
Half the engines on thier website have magnum valve covers, but they all say flat tappet

I guess well see what he has to say for himself

Atk 408 my brother had ate the cam bearings quickly. And now it's on the floor with a busted ring land.

Isn't Johnny Mac going all magnums? I thought I read somewhere the LA blocks were getting hard to find in mass. Could be wrong. Look up his thread about the 465 horse magnum.

Thanks for the callout fellas!!
Our new mopar offering is a magnum based 408. BPC4085 is the base PN. Roller cam, roller rocker, forged pistons. LA's are just about gone. Yes.

Our 408 uses a steel crank, being a stroker. To do a 5.9 cheaper, you'd basically have to reman a crank. And that's not something we do much of. So....if you're open to a 408, I will gladly work with you. If you are wanting a 5.9 for budgetary reasons, I fully understand, but as some pointed out above, that's about a stock rebuild with a cam.

I do not have any PM's that I see fyi.

Happy to help whenever!

Wanting to be around the 375 HP range don't think my car would take any more - stroker ok but want the magnum set up with roller cam and straight down bolt intake (not LA style) looks like the ATK 320 HP is a stock motor just letting it breath better with carb and exhaust

BluePrint Engines 408CI Stroker Crate Engine | Small Block Chrysler Style | Dressed Longblock with Carburetor | Iron Heads | Flat Tappet Cam

Yep that's a magnum why flat tappet instead of roller presume to keep the cost down
BluePrint engines is a performance engine company. Period

ATK is a reman company, owned by an auto recycler, with a performance branch.......it wouldnt shock me if that roller cam is a regrind, and the reman content outweighs the new.

JMAC and BPE gets my money.

absolutely correct and fully understood

If you're interested in building one, here's a Hot Rod magazine article.

How to Add 129hp to a 5.9l Mopar Magnum - Engine Buldup - Hot Rod Network

I just picked up a low mileage 5.9 and am getting ready to build it. For now just intake, carb, headers, torque converter and timing set. Should get it to around 320 hp. Headers are the biggest expense since it's going into a 66 Barracuda. Hopefully I'll do it for around $2k.

yes I have read that several times here's one that I like 5.9L Magnum Engine - Make Mine A 5.9

I agree that 320 is a pretty good "gross" HP calculation from the advertised stock 245 "net" HP number.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but it's a good one. I just picked up a '71 Valiant with 39,800 original miles. It is really solid and has a fresh blue metal flake paint job. I'm excited to have it!

It current has the 198 slant six (yes, not even the 225!) and I'm a power guy so I've been diligently researching crate engines. ATK and Blueprint were on my short list, hence resurrecting this thread. I'm an automotive engineer of 21 years in the Detroit area, so I get pretty deep into the weeds on technical factors.

So... I really want a good bang-for-the-buck motor and I'm drawn to the Magnum-based 408 from Blueprint. My question / concern is that both Blueprint and ATK use the stock Magnum heads which are crack-prone. Why not use (or at least offer for extra) the aftermarket and stronger EQ heads (EQ-CH318A)? They flow better and are much stronger. Also, how much does it really save to go backwards to a flat tappet cam? Aren't there good roller cams that don't cost much more? The Magnum engine block is already set up for roller.

@Johnny Mac - would love any input! Really trust your insight. If that motor had the better EQ heads and a moderate roller, it would be a no-brainer. Could that maybe be a mid-level upgrade between that and the aluminum head roller 408?

Why in the world would you want the straight down bolt intakes, there is hardly any selection in intakes, and even used ones are not cheap.

The EQ heads are not being produced anymore last time I looked.
