Wheel hop in REVERSE?

Ok years ago i did a auto to manual shift in my 65 barracuda. Ever since i have been fighting a severe thud and wheel hop in reverse. Under suggestion i changed leaf springs, no help. I have played with pinion angle. Best i have had tranny down 2.7 degrees down and rear 1 degree down and slip the clutch. Recently i tried still tranny 2.7 down and rear 1.5 up and that made it worse even with slipping clutch. Could the unparalleled angle 2.7 down and 1.5 up be the issue. I have a pair of 4 degree shims. It might make it slightly over on the up side. Any thoughts appreciated. Might try to shim tranny up a degree or so. Thanks
 
My friend went to the track did a burn out backed up took it out of rev then put it back in rev thinking it was first. launched the car and spit out the reverse idler gear and part of the case. luckily nobody got hurt, it came out at a very high speed.
 
The leaf springs aren't designed to work that way in reverse.
 
Ur pinion angle has to be lower than ur trans angle. If ur trans is -2.7 ur pinion has to be -4.2 to have a 1.5* difference. I know Others will disagree with this but that’s how it’s is meant to be. U cannot have the pinion higher than the tranny. U just raised the pinion and the problem got worse. So there u have confirmed it for yourself. Kim
 
Are you trying to say that when you put it into reverse at idle you get a thud and a chiro?

Or are you saying you purposely put it in reverse and floor it doing a burnout?

I have to agree with oldkimmer. From the way it reads you converted to manual transmission. With the pinion angle above trans angle when you back the car up the pinion rotates down to be in a more direct line with trans that could be causing a bind and things will not be happy.
 
The incorrect angle could be aggravating it. Bad engine and transmission mounts could too.

Don't you be doin wheelies in reverse!! It will make the rest of us look bad, because we can't do them.
 
Why is everyone telling him about pinion angle?
The ring gear in his head is what is screwed up.
Pinion angle is not going to fix that.

And to think he went thru all the trouble to change the rear springs, WOW
 
So much for serious answers to a serious problem. There are no burn outs. After putting it in reverse the problem occurs when trying to let clutch out. . I actually saw the wheels hop of the ground when someone else tried it. The articles i have used for every degree down the tranny is the rear must be up the same to stay parralle under normal driving. So today i removed the 2 degree up shim and replaced it with a 4 degree up. Now i have 2.7 tranny down and 4.3 up. It actually did better. I think ill machine a degree off to get it closer. I haven't pulled the rear yet to see if any issues there. Thanks to those giving serious advice.
 
As long as you get your pinion angle correct and everything "else" is good regarding springs, all the spring bushings, mounts and u joints, you will fix your problem. You need to put out of your mind what it's doing in reverse and concentrate on setting the car up correctly. Like a lot have said, the car is not really even designed to back up. Sure, it has reverse and for short distances and slowly like backing out a parking place, or backing down a driveway. Slowly. The suspension is not designed to take the same shock loads in reverse as forward. If you concentrate on stopping the wheel hop in reverse only, you will be working backwards and very likely make the car hell to drive going forward. The reason for that is because everything you do to the rear suspension to stop wheel hop in reverse will work against traction going forward.
 
I gave you a chart to read, It might be hard to read but you can go to Mark Williams web site and down load it. The trans and rear end need to be parallel, it does not matter if the rear end is up or down from the trans but they have to be parallel to each other. The reason you want the pinion down a couple degrees is under acceleration the pinion twist up and then they are parallel and this is in forward gear not reverse. If you are not drag racing it then you want it closer to parallel. I have never in my life seen a rear wheel jump off the ground unless some major force has been applied. Are you sure it's not the clutch chattering?

All i drive is a clutch and none of them do what i am experiencing with this car.
