Oil Pan Straighten

Well, I screwed up a nice oil pan on my 383 by over tightening. I'm making some progress straightening this out, but using odd combos in effort to hammer the right area. I've read about people "using a 2x4" but I can't imagine how that was effective.

How about you? What have you specifically used to straighten out an oil pan?

You use the 2x4 to back up the rail as you use two ball peen hammers to reverse the bolt holes back to or a little past flush. Use 2 hammers so the blow to the hole is in the right spot.

I can see doing that for the bolts holes - I think.
But what about straightening the rails?

I use the edge of my vise jaws. Just put the pan rail down on it, get a small ball peen hammer and tap the bolt holes back flat.

I've straightened one by laying it down on a flat section of smooth concrete and worked it with a hammer.

If your tapping a hardened hammer with another hardened hammer, please wear safety googles. The 2x4 allows a little positive give so your overcorrecting the damaged spot. Metal is springy, it takes a little more effort get it past flat to have it hold.
