I built a mild 360 hydraulic cam 273 adjustable rockers. I used Johnson US made lifters. Since new (600 miles) I get a pretty good tap tap tap. It will almost go completely silent after 3-4 minutes. I have tried all preload settings. It's just a lazy lifter. I pulled the lifter and took it apart. Seemed clean and normal. It's not wiping the cam.... knock on wood. I have a new lifter I am going to throw in and break in. Has anybody else just had a lifter than wouldn't pump correctly? Thanks.

Well now this is interesting a 360 hydraulic cam engine with 273 adjustable rockers. Aren't the 273 adjustable rockers supposed to be used with solid lifters ?

More info . . .

I have heard of many using them on 340/360's. The original shafts were junk. I had these 273's in a box in great shape so I used them. My engine builder buddy did have to order special pushrods for it. I have a lot of oil in the shaft and top end for what its worth.

Theory is less flex. Good for an extra 500
rpm. Make sure you have the proper valve covers.

What surprises me that your Builder didn't just use solid lifters...
Why in the hell would I want to listen to noisy lifters in a very mild engine? And have to adjust them every 8 miles. Solid lifters have their place... and that’s not in my weekend cruisers. To each their own but that’s dumb and going backwards to do that. I don’t want the hassle of solids for a basically stock 360. No thanks.

That's correct. As long as you use the correct length pushrods for hydraulic lifters, you can use the adjustable mechanical rocker arms. In fact, it's a good idea if you really want to zero in on lifter preload.

Basiclly stock 273. Clatters a bit when cold. Get it up to temp and it's fine. Haven't adjusted them for 2 years.

The 340 T/A was hyd lifters and adjustable rockers and it worked great. Anyone that says it wont work doesn't understand what they are talking about. I have used 273 rockers and hyd lifters several times and they work great checked them once a year and never needed to adjust them.

Mmmmm mmmmmmm mmmmmm

I just luv hyd lifters!!!

(Actually ....... not so much)
yea, in the 6000 rpm range I tend to agree

solids have there place, just not here.

are we having a bad day?

I didn't see anybody say they wouldn't work. There was a little tiff over mechanical vs. hydraulic lifters. Was the T/A valve train what inspired the "banana grooves"?

T/A had nothing to do with the banana groove, that was back in 64, 273 had them. Read post #2

I read post #2. I've read all of the posts. #2 says nothing about banana grooves. I have 273 valve train on my 340 off of my 67 273 and it does not have banana grooves.

To me going through the trouble of having adjustable rockers and then buying pushrods for them and your building the motor why not just get the solid lifters? Eliminate one of the 16 problems you could be having? That's why I said I'm merely surprised that this route was taken.
"Adjust the Rockers every 8 Miles" ..
You know I ain't gonna take somebody call me out like I'm an idiot...

The shaft's were great for what they were intended for, no mopar factory shaft is good for .600 lift spring pressure.

Then someone at some time switched them. You said nobody said hyd lifters with mechanical rockers wouldn't work but post #2 questioned it.

Sorry I had to hit the disagree on that one but I have...

But I have What? I have used them on my .572 cam with no problem at 7600 RPM, but all engine builders say you need shafts that wont flex.

I have owned a 65 HP 273 and no banana grooves. My 66 HP doesn't have them either. Or the 3 that I parted out. Just sayin!
