Hi all, as my car gets closer to getting ready for paint I have a question. I’ve heard originally the radiator supports were blacked out on most cars spare the occasional light car and “dark colored cars”. It’s a 69 barracuda originally T5 and it’s going back T5 (bronze fire metallic) however there was too much paint over the original to tell if it was blacked out at some point. Is anyone able to tell on average if this color was still blacked out or not? Have any pictures of original blackout for the painters? Thanks.

I would say yes, my 67 Copper was but it is a little lighter.
Don't forget the insets on the valance.

Have any pics?
No, sorry. Repainted now, but not blacked in yet. But if you are not concerned about 100% factory Restoration, if you paint the entire front of the core support and around the headlights I don't think you can go wrong. Mine is a restomod so I'm not worried about 100% factory correct. I bet somebody on here has pics. I can tell you it was a flat black or semi-gloss that had faded to flat black.

ANY color except dark blue, black, and dark green will get the blackout.

And I've never seen any green car without it.

You do know they were sprayed from the underside with the person in the pit as the car went over them. That's why the spray pattern is like it is.

The coverage was very subjective, here is my 67 Barracuda

On my Barracuda there was pretty good coverage, notice that the area behind the headlight to the outside was missed as the angle they sprayed. Notice on this car the lower part of the core support was missed (I'd do it as it is seen under the valance).

The bottom of the latch panel wasn't done but the front of the support was. (rear was still copper)

Ignore the outboard portion as that fender was repainted on the outside and overspray into this area.

Here you can see the top of the latch panel was not done, seen way too many cars paint this black.

Here you can see the spray marks on the fender, notice the top of the headlight bucket is still copper and the separation on the angled portion in front of the bumper, hard to see but both of those are natural unmasked lines. (blackout overspray marks on the driverside fender are missing do to the resprayed fender.)

Like I said, every car is different and coverage is subjective.

68original's car has just a few hundred miles on it. It has radiator support overspray on the underside of the hood.

I idea wast to not see body color when viewed from the front. Mainly seeing thru the grill and seeing body color. Never looks right. The factory took no care in painting even the engine compartment, ever notice all the runs on an original car?
Sorta like people that do their interiors in all the same color and amount of gloss or flat? Just ain't right.

Thanks Mike.
I will post pics this weekend to help the cause. BTW car odometer is still in single digits. Still haven’t hit 10 miles on the trailer queen.
