Need A Little help Please

One thing that isn’t surprising....... is you making numerous posts on a thread where you have don’t have anything useful to offer pertaining to the topic of the thread, but still find it necessary to interject unrelated info about your car to the conversation.

It’s like when two people are having a conversation, and someone wanders up and interrupts and just starts yammering about something totally unrelated to the original conversation...... invariably talking about their own ****.

Case in point...... the thread is about sorting out an 1/8 mile bracket race combination......
and you come up with......

Not to mention, if I was looking around on this site for advice or help in deciding whether or not I wanted to rebuild a transmission........ I wouldn’t be trying to find it in “help me sort out my combo” type threads.

This is what typically happens to just about any thread here. It usually doesn't take long before it gets ran off the road into a ditch.

Well, that went poorly. I am thinking in the OP’s case if it would be viable for him to switch to 5.13 gears first. That’s a given for the projected performance in the eighth. Then before determining anything else check the cranking compression and confirm that everything is where its supposed to be. If it were mine I would be checking the ICL on the cam and the piston to valve clearance to determine how much I could advance the cam. Coming up on the pipe late with little torque off the line would have me suspicious of the cam being installed with excessive retard. Not saying that the converter is optimum either, but it’s certainly less expensive to see if it’s possible to get the existing cam and converter working together for the intended outcome than it is to order a custom converter.

I'd go over everything with a fine tooth comb. The converter is not right but there is something else off too. IMHO at 2800# he should be running 6.5-60's now. I didn't see it posted but I'm guessing it has a 4" crank in it? If that's the case either the tune is way off or it's the cam. I've never seen a 4" engine that was "soft" on the bottom unless it was way off.

My Dart ran high 6.50's with 4.10 gears and a 28" tall tire, a 260/264 @ .050" flat solid at 3240# on pump 93.

I didn't see the compression mentioned but I'd verify that too.

This should be step one for sure.
Quick, easy, free.

But....... what would the number have to be for you to dive into the motor a little deeper?

First I'm shocked @Cudafever doesn't know how to rebuild his own transmission! Certainly rebuilding that Holley carburetor was much more intricate...
So first of all let's just start by stomping out this automatic transmission Boogeyman. Probably perpetuated by transmission Folk who will tell you that there's things you don't know and say all kinds of Boogeyman scary stuff to make you not try it yourself... remember the old days the tranny starting to slip so you better sell the car?..
First off when I rebuilt my first transmission a couple years ago I had no book and just some YouTube videos and a very gracious member sent me a Factory manual DVD...
Second 99% of my tools are from Harbor Freight... There was only one special tool needed and I actually used a bent piece of c bar and my vice in lieu of it... If you want to get super crazy you might buy some bushing setting tools which is just a round piece of metal the same size as the bushings to pound it in straight..
Taking off the tail housing I think was four bolts and a c clip. Then tighten the front band adjuster which is the only bolt sticking out with a set screw so the guts don't fall out when you pull the pump off the front... Valve body is the two or three screen bolts and the 10 bolts that hold the valve body on... The standard way to take the pump off the front is to take all 6 bolts out and to the side boats have inner threads to grab it by and slide hammer it out which I did that like a rookie the first time that watch the video and a guy just stuck a screwdriver from behind and gave it a whack in the pump flew out... then you remove the front drum by loosening the band and the rear drum comes out and then you can pull the entire shaft out and that's it... You take the snap ring off the front drum and replace the Rings clutches and seals it's obvious when you pull it off. You do the same to the rear..
I went ahead and put a transgo 3 shift kit making it a full manual shift transmission...
It was by far the best automatic transmission I'd ever driven... it was neat to look at my friends when I shifted the transmission and they look at me like wow that is the way it's supposed to shift nice crisp not banging but crisp and right on cue..
of course this blew my head up and gave me confidence to do my buddies 350 turbo for his 6. 6 Trans Am.. it was a little more difficult as it just had twice as much of everything it seems like for what seemed like the same results and he's enjoying his ta...
this hillbilly I watch new like 13 videos and they're dry very dry but funny because well he's a hillbilly.. so as far as space he was doing it in his kitchen LOL...View attachment 1715428570 View attachment 1715428571 View attachment 1715428572
You can just see used a 2 foot by 8 foot sheet of plywood that I had ripped at the hardware store and set it up on two chairs as a workbench for this temporary project and it worked perfect...
Now if anything ever goes wrong with the transmission you'll know exactly what it is and why and how to fix it..
It was about $120 for the rebuild kit and about $85 or so for the transgo stage 3 shift kit...

I just haven't had the luck that you guys have had and i know why now......
Any ways here is the story.
Rebuilt my first 727, and you are right, with a couple of home made tools it was painless
Lasted until almost the end of the season, then failed.(this was when i was racing every other week end) at the now defunct RMR Raceway in SLC Utah.

Sooo i decide to take it to a "professional" aka a transmission shop!
Cost me a boat load of money and it failed yet again half way threw the season. Took it back and he adj the band and said that was all he could do because i race the car there was no warranty at all. The band adj was just being nice.(the band material was gone off the band so now the timing was real bad between the 1-2 shift lost 2nt gear before i got home that night!
My buddy had this guy build his 904(actually was a 998???? the one with the low first gear set) any ways, my buddy had been beating on his 68 dart that when into a 73 duster and work GRATE!
So, i had him rebuild my spare 727................Yup half way threw the season, it failed( this was my daily driver at the time.

There was a guy at the track that had a dragster with mopar big block and was running a 727 behind it. every time i failed a transmission i keep hearing about this guys transmission skills.

Soo, I Get ahold of him, drive to his house, drop off the transmission. He tells me that i should run a manual valve body in it if i'm going to race it........so i say ok and that i was going to build a new eng(I wasn't) and would it hold up to 500 Hp(stock 340 with a cam) He says no problem!!!!

That next year it live thru the hole year and i placed 17 at the end of the year.
The next year i was in 2n't place, the last race of the year but choked and ended up 4 for the year.
I have not raced hot and heavy like that and chase the point like that sence.
HOW EVER, that transmission was built in 1997....late 90' any ways...................STILL RUNNING STRONG TO THIS DAY!!!!!

CAN I REBUILD A 727 AND MAKE IT LIVE???? Yes i think so, because my failure was in the improper kick down linkage set up on the transmission.......Manual valve body eliminates that problem. All of my problems was 2nt gear band burning up.

When this 727 fails, will i rebuild it myself........................Not as long as that old man is still alive. If not then i will probably give it another go.

So J par
There is your answer, to your "Shock" and disbelief of my skills......................................

I would not mess with the gears until you find out why you are down on power (because you are down on power). Once you find the power you probably won't want to change the gears.

For what its worth (kinda like what justinp61 said), my 408 (ported eddy heads, 264/268 solid cam) runs 6.5's @ 104 mph at 3250# through the mufflers, also with 4.10 gears and 28" tires. I believe you should be faster than that once you find the culprit that is holding back the power, considering your cars weight....no gear change necessary.

My guess is you don't have enough compression for that big cam (or the cam is installed way off). Good luck.

Just finished looking at the numbers...I bet you are down about 100 hp, or possibly a little more. Let us know what you find when you have time to dig into it.

I think this just proves your hard-on for me personally! You won't go back to post earlier to the guy not thinking he has the correct skills or tools to do the job? And I tell him he does... You don't continue on to see where another member is going to send him a DVD to be able to do it? You just zero in on me because I'm the easy target.. when I interject my car and my situation it's the show that anybody can do it even a moron like me...
So where is 70AARcudas tongue lashing?...
And Rusty Rat Rods tongue lashing proposed number 68?
Garrett Ellison post 52?
Basically get off my *** unless you're going to get on the rest of these guys and that goes for all the people who agreed and liked you on that comment as well...
Stick that in your pipe and smoke it..

First of all F'em...
I knew there had to be more to that story and it sounded like you did just great except for putting the full manual kit in it..
Also the one you rebuilt lasted longer than all the others until this last old guy...

Gears cam converter...
How many different ways do you want to slice this pie?.. it all has to be checked...

I have a thing for you “personally”?

I don’t even know you..... so it’s def not a “personal” thing.

The way you constantly load up threads with drivel where someone is seeking technical advice? Yeh...... I’m not a fan, so I called you out on it.

When you feel enough tech info has been talked about....... and especially if no one is talking about something you have anything useful to contribute....... you just decide it’s time to talk about “me”.
Then the tech is over and the thread spirals into oblivion.

Here’s a suggestion for you on where to dispense the non-pertinent info you simply can’t contain, and feel you must enlighten us all with.

Since it has nothing at all to do with whatever the topic at hand is........ then it doesn’t really matter if it gets posted somewhere else instead.

So, when you feel that urge to start typing away with unrelated info...... stop!
Take a second....... pull up one of your own threads...... doesn’t matter which one, or what it’s about....... since what you’re going to type will have just as much relevance to that thread as the one you were just about to derail........ and feel free to type away as much as you want...... since it’s your own thread.
This way you get it out of your system without screwing up someone else’s thread.

Yes me personally you obviously didn't see my point.. like you said I don't know you either but we are familiar with each other's ways here on the Forum and you're not seeing your way? Your way of pointing me out and I tried to point out the five six other people and you'd have no words for them whatsoever it's always me... At least in your eyes.. and just so you know I do not type in pretty much everybody knows that I just voice command.. I want to hear you call out that laundry list of people that I pointed out that had nothing to say about the subject at hand then I believe I'm not being zeroed in on...
And more to the point you're not adding s*** either.. all you're doing is zeroing in on me of the six or seven people that had comments... Remember I didn't start on that transmission thing until someone started talking about 4 speed and all that crap.. I didn't start giving technical advice on transmission until someone called me out on it... again out of the five or six people at least that had off subject comments you zero in on me..
The unfortunate part here is I really do take your personal technical advice to heart, but I'm not going to sit here and get singled out out of all the people who contributed to the derailment.. and right now you're no better...

Translation:
Enough with the tech....... let’s talk about meeee!!!!!
Again read back and look at all the other comments! I answered to them I didn't start.. yet another post that has nothing to do with the subject but zeroing in on me...

I think someone already said it you kick my sand castle and I'm going to kick yours...

I went back and read all your posts on this thread.
You had nothing to contribute to helping the OP resolve his situation....... yet you’ve done the most typing.

This is a recurring theme.

Talking about everything under the sun...... except what the actual topic is about.

Believe it or not........ it’s not a requirement for you to post on subjects where you don’t have anything relevant to add.

No one will mind if you just read through it and move on.

Okay it started with one member saying his entire combination and at the end he was taking his Transmission in to be rebuilt or looked over.
then a member says I'm surprised J par didn't say something about a real man having three pedals or a real race car having three pedals or something like that?
then I said I just roll my eyes and know my own stuff and that I wouldn't let anybody rebuild my transmission or something like that?
then that first guy came in took it as a personal job and said that he didn't have the skills or the tools to do it...
then I reassured him he did have the skills and the tools to do it and gave him an example of an idiot like me with pictures..
Then another member came in and said he would even send him a DVD...
Then he came on and gave his personal email address so it could be sent to him...
Now seemingly encouraged to do his own transmission work...
now was that all about me or all about me trying to encourage people to do their own work..
I know you own your own shop and he probably wouldn't prefer people to do their own work?...
you can try every angle you want to zero in on me and make it seem like it was all my fault.. and I'm trying to talk about myself.. when my simple examples did encourage the guy to at least look into a DVD and try to do some of his own work himself...
And yes at some point the subject is going to get covered six ways to Sunday and the original poster has already said he's got all the food he needs to work on for thought... And needs to process it all..
Now vicariously We've Ended up helping another member out....
Was that so terrible?..

You disagree??

Huh.

Well...... maybe those pics of a 4 speed trans all apart, or you telling us about reserving your spot at the swap meet is just the little nugget of info the OP needed to help him understand what his next move should be.

again don't make me go through this thread I'm not doing the research like you are but I will go back and point out all the non pertinent comments everybody made and quote them all for you so you can see that you are zeroing in on me and not reading anybody else's post...
Do you want me to waste my time or do you want to end this?
Remember my mom always told me the more you roll with a turd the stinkier you get..

I could easily quote five to seven people that made comments not pertaining to this subject but I don't want to drag them into it I could just simply quote all of your last comments and double all that..
If I was the turd I'm no longer am...

Here’s how I look at it......

If I was posting for some advice on a message board..... and came back a couple days later to find 20 or 30+ posts of information totally not relevant to my question....... I probably wouldn’t feel like that was a resource that I wanted to revisit often.

I’d just be like.....WTF are they talking about?
