I've got a 360 magnum with 84 k miles. I want have a fun drivable car that can hold it's own. It's going in a 74 Duster 833 4 speed with 8 3/4 3.91 sure grip. I was thinking of leaving the bottom end alone and putting a cam and trick flow heads in it. I have an Eddie intake and carb already. New lifter rockers oil pump and double timing chain. Is it feasible ??or due i need to save for something like the hot rod IMM engine build. With a ball hone, icon forged piston 10.4:1, bigger 565 lift can mother thumper, imm eq ported heads with larger valves. I know this isnt budget for all but I'm not looking at $6500 strokers neither. The cam for the stock bottom end was something like a voodoo retro for hydraulic roller specs.HR 262/270 .507/.515 lift 211/219@.50 I seen that yellow rose liked their high efficiency cans and I thought that was close. It has a 318 in it now that runs ok. Since I out the 3.91 in it it'll out a grin on your face. Changed title since its not budget build apparently if you spend any money. Heads and the associated dependability items were my budget. So with a solid bottom end with trick flow heads what cam is a good recommendation.

First off........what do you mean by hold it's own? Against what?

Budget to me means you don't spend a dime you don't have to and you adhere to the principles of KISS............

84k miles on a magnum is peanuts; can you/ did you do a compression/leak down test, if it passes that, I'd have the cam that is in it reground ( as a Magnum I'm guessing it's a roller hydraulic) to a sportier profile, OR up grade to what was put in the 360 hp crate engine.....go have fun

Against anything comparable
Riceburners camaro rustangs get the idea. Yes leakdown test good 123-130 psi

Maybe aftermarket magnum heads (no cracks) iron (Chinese, engine quest, RHS/Indy), or Edelbrock aluminum.
3.91 gears,?, maybe more camshaft roller version of the lunati 60403
Edelbrock or Chinese airgap intake
Speedpro H116 or Keith Black 107 pistons
Scat I beam rods, 800 avs Edelbrock carb
Double or true roller timing chain, kevko oil pan & pickup

You will ‘hold your own’ for what you have

Do the measurements, mill heads or block, calulate for gasket thickness and shoot for .035” quench

You say budget, then you say, "New lifter rockers oil pump and double timing chain. Is it feasible or due i need to save for something like the hot rod IMM engine build. With a ball hone, icon forged piston 10.4:1, bigger 565 lift can mother thumper, imm eq ported heads with larger valves."
What is the budget?

Budget. Means to spend as little as possible for the best and most maximum return possible with what you have.

In working with what you have now, leaving the short block alone, not touching a thing, while working with the 4spd & 3.91 gears, I myself would look at a cam in the 238 - 242 duration @ .050 (solid or roller) with as much lift as what ever head your working with. Grab the matches springs for the cam and a new double roller timing chain.

I would top it with a RPM Intake & the carb you have now. Headers into a “H” piped 2-1/2 exhaust. I’d use the Summit or Jegs exhaust system and purchase the H pipe to splice in.

If heads are in your future build, make sure the aftermarket head works on a Magnum block or use the aftermarket LA head that oils through the pushrods if your block is t drilled for it already. Comp Pro Magnum rockers are ball & ball pushrod oil feed ready in a 1.5 ratio.

I would not change pistons because budget is now out the window. Mill the heads a little bit for a better ratio and forget the idea of quench.

On a stock 360 bottom end with something as small as a 211@.050 hyd roller cam....... I def don’t feel you’d be exploiting the potential of the TF heads.
I don’t think they’d be “worse” than the alternative, and at least you’d already have the heads for a future build, but I think I could make equal or more power for less $$.

SM heads with some prep/blending and a spring upgrade along with a nice solid cam.

With his gear ratio and what I see for a tire, on the street, he I! I’d go with a medium size solid cam in the 240@.050 area with as much lift as I could ring out of it. That’s if the trick flow heads are employed. Later on, it would be a RPM-AG & a 750 carb.

An off the shelf cam like this activated by 1.6 rockers would be really nice on the street.

I have a heavily ported set of magnum heads on a SBE 5.9, had oregon regrind me a stick. 242/248 @.050 .550/.550 on a 110
Its a fun and rowdy little small block for what it is. This is with an m1 single plane and 750dp.

I dont put much on rocker ratio , but i like your overall advice.

Thanks. I just like to take as much advantage of the heads flow capabilities as possible when I can. Thinking of the SBM valve train and what you loose on lift as actually installed vs what the paper says.... I like to try and get it back if I can. Will it add much? Not a whole lot but then again every time you do something like that, it adds up. Plus 1 for this, plus 1 for that, etc....

Some one local do the port work. Is this on your turbo ride?

As are the heads. You're at $3200 before you even get started. But it is a good start, but maybe not what most around here consider "budget".
$3200 damn! That stuff adds up quick ! I've been looking at specials by early next year there has to be a killer deal. Pro max site was 20% off. They dont look bad. I may have to buy some bits and start grinding. I figure a good port match would really help and I could pull that off. The short turn?? That's something that I would have to witness rather than read about before i tried.

This sounds like more $ for a top end than you could get a 408 for? All in the sake of retaining a stock bottom end?

Yeah I'm starting to think so. Im starting to think new gaskets, cam, timing set,and stock heads done up. I wanted to get the mechanics done before paint so an accident is less likely, but having this thing tore apart to paint is a pain also. Stuff here stuff there and stuff gets lost or broken somehow while I'm working ob something else. My paint guy has put me off twice now and I'm not even going to complain. Just made me want ti move on to this. Might have to take a chill pill and reevaluate!

You can run low 12's with a dyno tested, 30 month warranty engine for 5k as a longblock....3200 for a top end is insane to back on top of a used, stock, shortblock. IMO

Gotta agree with the man Johnny Mac.
I e seen people just slam on some Edelbrock heads, intake and a carb, stab a cam in it and run respectable numbers. Once you do the math on cost, it isn’t bad for what it is. It’s still a 5.9. It’ll have to work a little harder vs a 408.

Thanks rumble! Yes I ran 12's with the magnum Headed 408 I linked above. Now I run 10's and trailer the car to the track with my bracket engine....lots of times I look at it and wish I had the street bruiser 408 we sell....pick your battles, and in this case (and many others) you can't build something unless you are reusing used pieces parts, for what we can do ya a finished engine for.

Is Blueprint going to offer Mopar short blocks in the near future.
I keep getting asked the question, and I guess the answer is, we need to. My only concern is making sure the public understands the magnum block does NOT oil through the heads. Which eliminates most LA based heads w/o some trickery.

This is on my list for tomorrow.

In some configurations, we do what we call a "shortblock plus" which is a complete longblock....minus heads.... So has cam, lifters, timing cover. Literally everything minus heads. It's a smart idea, problem is everyone wants to pick their own cam....regardless if they know how to or not...We use cams that make reliable power...not ones that "hit a lick" or have a "3/4 race profile" or that your best friends cousin made 800HP with in a 318 truck :p

I started with a 2001 5.9 Magnum. My $2500 budget is now at $5200.

Damn scope creep :BangHead:

...but it's been fun for me since it's the first time going this deep in a V8. New rings, bearings, heads, intake, carb, timing gear set, balancer, torque converter, headers, etc, etc. Should be in the car running by Christmas.

Once I got started I couldn't see doing it without doing it right.

So, yes a Blueprint engine could be the ticket!!

So you are only 30 months of warranty and full dyno testing, and a few hundred hours worth of Labor behind us ;) lol. I hear that story every day:) I know I'm a shameless advertiser, but it honestly is about helping ppl. And saving them $$
