Lower control arm shaft bushing, 65 Barracuda

By now (since these type of control arms have been in use for ages) there must be an easier way to remove the "outer shell" from the lower control arm, shaft bushing. I'm rebuilding my lower control arms and I have pressed out the shafts and the rubber portion of the old bushing. I removed the inner shell from the shaft by splitting the shell with my Dremel. (Not covered in the service manual) The service manual says to remove the outer shell, which is still in control arm (probably for 54 years) "by cutting it with a chisel. Use care not to cut into control arm."
There must be an easier way?

Weld a washer to it and press it out. Some folks use a large pipe tap and press that out. Or just go to town with a hammer and chisel. I tend to favor the washer and welder.
 
I couldn't find an "easy" way. I used a sawsall to cut four slots, then went to town with a hammer and chisel. Once I got them beat in towards the center, I was able to knock them out from behind.

Not my idea of fun...but I got 'um done!!
 
While this is covered in a sticky thread at the top of this forum these are the two most common ways to remove the outer shell.

 
I knew if I asked, I would get some answers. I've been on this forum five years and have really picked up some great information. I've been a professional mechanic since the age of 16 and I still learn something new everyday. :thumbsup:

I couldn’t get mine out to save my life. I tried literally everything that everyone recommended but still couldn’t, thought I’d try and beat them out with a BFH but ended up bending the entire LCA. Great excuse to by some QA1s lol
 
Just did my 69 Dart last week. Bought a press from Harbor freight for $100 and a 1 3/8" tap off Ebay for $12.99. Was a piece of cake.

The tap is my usual method but sometimes they don't press easily and rather than break a tap I cut a groove on those with my sawzall and chisel 'em out.
 
BTW: I forgot to ask earlier...There is nothing in the manual, that I can see that covers play limitations, or how much is too much play in the torsion arm / adjuster and how play would be removed.
