Electronic ignition for Slant 6

Its finally time to get rid of the old, points and condenser. Looking at the Summit catalogue, I see there are several Pertronix units. Can someone recommend, which to get for a '69 slant 6?
 
None of them. Pertronix is a bubble gum ignition.
Just get a Chrysler 1974 electronic distributor, Mopar ecu, Mopar Performance wire harness. Easy install. Bullet proof, reliable Chrysler ignition. Update to an electronic voltage regulator while you are at it. Added bonus: All the parts are readily available, on the road.

Whichever the latest model is. It should have more features. I didn't see but 2.

I agree, but the MP ignition was not in his list. lol
 
I would not be afraid to run Pertronix, and plenty of guys on this board run them. My little Farmall 100 (Super A) had one when I bought it, and it's never missed a beat.

I would run a Mopar dist with a GM HEI conversion. There are plenty of threads on this, here, as well as a write-up over at slantsix.org
 
Stock Mopar electronic is a good system, just remember you need to mount the ecu somewhere also. Petronix I really like retrofit two reasons, just two wires to hook up and you retain the original curve in the distributor. I prefer the early one way less fail rate. Seems the PII and III have a higher fail rate usually right out of the box. A lot of the "kits" go full in way to fast and ping. That's why the curve is never listed with them. JMO Also Dans how to above is a great option also. Really many ways to do it.

I have been running the Pertronix I in my cars for over 20 years now.Never had a failure even on high mileage daily drivers. Not saying that there aren't failures as everything and anything can fail.
Maybe do what ever your budget allows.
 
I run a Pertronix in my Swinger. Starts good and runs well. No ballast to burn out, no ecu to go bad.
 
No problem with performance either. I run the Pertronix I in this engine for the last 12 years.

Petronix is simplest install, Mopar is very dependable and you can likely get everything you need to convert from a salvage yard, HEI conversion is also a great option.
Whatever you decide on, just keep spare parts on hand, especially if it is something that is not readily available locally.

I have run the Mopar ECU dist. system for what? 40 yrs on many cars. I never had a failure, just lucky I guess.

The old Mopar system was a great option at the time. Fast forward 50 years and there are better options. Only after I swapped out my Mopar system to HEI did I find that out.
 
YellowDart69, If you do go with the Pertronix,read everything about them and don't forget to order the correct ohm coil. It makes a difference. For 4 and 6 cylinder cars they recommend a 3.0 ohm coil. V8 cars 1.4 or .06 ohm. Chrysler takes a 1.4-1.5 ohm. Not sure what the HEI recommendation is.

I don't know what it is with these Mopar Idiots that give this bad advice and not knowing the consequences of doing so. I tell people and post this every time someone ask's your question, and all the time the stupid people that think they know everything can't comprehend ****! Pertronix II is the way to go, easy simple, and hidden & looks like stock. Good Luck

Thats a transistorize voltage regulator not a transistorized ignition system

Actually YOU DO NOT NEED to do that because all or virtually all 69/ earlier replacement store-bought voltage regulators are now solid state. In other words, just buy a replacement regulator. On a side note------my 67, when i bought it, had a mopar breakerless conversion with a mechanical VR. Nobody has ever proved to me that it REALLY matters and I've been at this a LONG time.

First Mopar breakerless I ran was a conversion in my 70 RR in about 1973 or 4----Some guy pulled it out of his Duster, and I dropped it into my 340--swapped 70 RR. Of course it had electronic VR First MSD I ever had was the one they made to plug in / replace a Mopar ECU---in the mid 70's. (MSD5 or something.............)
 
My only complaint with Pertronix is (and I have used it) that it costs damn near as much for the conversion as it does for the entire Mopar electronic ignition system. From a financial standpoint, you get more for your money. A lot more.
 
I know a guy that ran his old RamCharger that was set up OEM on electronics, BUT he ran it on a points distributor. Said it ran fine he just had to change the points bout every 30 days! ha I gave him a used elect. dist. hahhahahhahhahhhha again
 
I guess I am the only one to have a problem with a pertronixs unit but the one I ordered didnt work. Sent that back and ordered Trail beast’s hei kit. Money well spent.

Go ahead and try that and see how that works out for you! More people have had problems then it being a solution!

I run a Pertronix I in my slant six and use a stock coil with a ballast resistor. I notice some people don't use a ballast resistor when they run the II or III. Do you find that the case, and do you still use a ballast resistor in your Pertronix I like I do?

I tried pertonix years ago and it didn't work.

the best luck I had was with as many used parts I could find laying around. I did get a electronic conversion harness off ebay and an auto zone remanufactured electronic distributor. 6 years later and almost 30K miles later and it will start right now. I did not upgrade anything else and kept it simple, just ran what is there and is still there now that still works great. Total cost was under 50 bucks (2012 prices)
