Carburetor Question - Is this a good call?

-
thanks Mike - back in 2004 when i first got it the carb worked fine for it.. so i know it COULD work for the car. Ive been convinced now that an adjustment like what you stated above would be a fix that would work. I believe the gaskets will all be OK since it WAS rebuilt not too long ago.. but im betting float, power valve, or jets need some help.
Don't forget about the accelerator pump "cam"....those are those colorful plastic do-hickies in one of my pics. They determine how fast and at what rate fuel is dumped when you stomp on the gas. If the engine stumbles when you accelerate it could be the "cam". TOO MUCH INFO HUH???

Power valve is very common on Holleys. One backfire and it's toast. The old floats can leak and fill with fuel which floods them. Float adjustment is easy on the Holleys. It can be done externally.

most newer holleys have power valve savers. You can buy and add a power valve saver if you have an older holley and it don't have one

And just a thought here -how old is the gas in the tank?

4 days. That's the thing - it runs JUST good enough to cruise about town and look bitchin'. Starts great, cold running wonderfully, warms up and then starts acting like an asshole. At stop lights i kick it in neutral when warm otherwise it'll sputter out.. (i'll raise the warm idle a bit more to help that tonight some) Also, when i want to push on it some a lot of times it bogs out and almost dies.. let go of the gas peddle and then let it come back to life.. then softly continue.. annoying as F.

is your choke coming open all the way??? IF it runs decent cold, then gets worse as it warms, it's because it's running rich and the cold motor likes that better, but the warm engine won't.

HA no its great thanks everyone :) That does sound about correct.. experience level here would be fantastic...!

I know i could google this BUT are there different power valves like how there are different jets? And would anyone know the proper jets/power valve for my application (stock commando 273)?

Damn, i dont know. I'll have to see somehow. that could be true..

We all need to remember it worked well before. No need to change a bunch of stuff if it worked good before.

back in 2004 when i was in college i used to drive it 80 miles one way to my folks house for a weekend home, no problem. Now is a very different story. The difference between then and now is I did a core exchange once with it, and the "new" carb has gone through 2 rebuilds.

If your done with the Holley and want to try the Carter/Edelbrock carb, grab the 500 AVS and a rod and jet tuning kit for it.
This is the carb I would be looking at;
Edelbrock AVS2 Series Carburetors 1901

Hi all -

Currently on my '65 Commando 273 I have a Holley 4160 and I'm done fighting with it - I've had nothing but issues with adjustments and sputtering, dying at stoplights (no amount of adjustments seem to keep it going) etc.. I found a rebuilt Edelbrock 1406 and since it's similar to the old Carters that were on these cars, I'm thinking of picking it up and seeing if it fixes my woes.

I know basically next to nothing about carbs and no buddies who have a knowledge base I can pull from. I've rebuilt a Holley in the past, I understand simple adjustments, and can install them.. but I've had no training or whatever in that department ever other than the good ol "Let's see what happens!"

My question is if this carburetor is a good match for the '65 273 (and if it is) any tips on installation and such.

I'll throw some pictures below - a snapshot of the engine with the Holley on it (PS the springs aren't set up like that anymore..) and the new Carburetor I'm debating picking up tomorrow. Let me know your thoughts!

Thanks,
Jeff

I had a 600 holley on the shelf for 12yrs and put a new accelerator pump in it and dropped on my brothers 273 runs great!

Hey 'crash' - Long time no 'talk' to. I was going to start a conversation with you to keep from hijacking this thread, but your inbox is full.

Unless you know what you are doing, you are going to chase your tail with that Holley. Power valves, pump cam, springs, jets, on and on. Wish you were closer, I would install a Eddie 600 on that thing, turn the A/F screws out 1 1/2
turns, and you would burn rubber all the way down the street.

Just drop an eddelbrock on it, they work great for stock to slightly not stock engines.

With eddelbrock though you'll be back asking why it cranks so much when trying to start.

I've saved the link just in case - thank you!

Wish i was too - if you find yourself in SD reach out.. Or better yet take a trip with that carb and hang out! I'll buy lunch! Thats exactly what i wanted to do is just drop one on and see how it did and if it solved my issues and whatever.. damn.

That is me. stock for sure

Don't get caught up in that "eddy vs Holley" garbage, because that's all it is, garbage. Both run great on everyday drivers. I have a Eddy carb on one vehicle. I have 4 vehicles with Holleys. I'm not being prejudice. Just because Holley offers "more" tuning features, that doesn't mean you have to use them all to get it to run good. EVERY Holley I bought bolted on OOTB and ran super. Holley carbs sit on cars for years and run super never being touched, as well as edelbrocks

The factory 600 primary jet size is 64- 66.
power valve 65

Carter, set and forget! if you want to eek out the max performance, go with a Holley with its 32 different adjustments/tweaks...but for the rock solid carb...Carter/Edelbrock in that order. Look as the Carter tune up specs for the 273 to get your rod and jet. I have a couple of parts from a strip kit if you find a rod or jet is grossly out of spec.

is that for the Holley and what would work for my 273?
Yes for the Holley you have.
pull the metering block and check the primary jets and power valve. #'s should be stamped on both.
The 66 jet and 6.5 power valve is a good baseline and should work well with your 273.

10-4. i'll probably be picking up the pictured carb in the first post just because of the price no matter what and then i'll get those jets and power valve and see how it all works. Thank you!

I had a similar issue with my stock 67 273 (2bbl) turns out somewhere along its life someone plugged the vacuum advance line near the canister. once I removed the plug it jumped off idle great. might also verify that you have a proper vacuum source for your dist. (0 at idle and raises as rpm comes up)

You said 273 right? With solid lifters right?.
Loosen up your lash ; 4 on the intakes 2 on the exhaust and " see what happens"
