I've read a lot of talk about cam grinders, etc. My question is who do you trust most when it comes to camshaft recommendations?

Comp Cams? Oregon Cams? Lunati...?

Just curious as to your opinions and experiences.

For custom work, any of those will do. That said, best bang for buck and quality is Oregon Cam Grinders.

I agree on Oregon Cam Grinders.
I told them the intended usage and what I thought would be what I wanted.
They agreed, ground it for me, and it was here within a week for under 200 shipped.
(I wanted a cam with good torque plus a little hint of lope to it)

I've used Oregon Cam Grinders in the past and have been very pleased with their work. I know a number of other folks who have used them, and all have been equally happy.

Racer brown has great cams and lifter combos. They built performance cams for mopar back in the day and they can custom grind to your preferences. My motors always get them installed also. I like the purple shafts but super satisfied with my latest from racer brown. SSH-44. Its a hot 1!

Jim at Racer Brown. A little old school for getting in touch with, but worth it.

2 p.m.ish to 7p.m. ish, usually. 410-866-7660

Jim at racer brown
Dart19666 (pm here) at crower
Mike Jones has the best computer program and 40 years experience and his great Dad before him
limited Hyd grinds, worlds best roller and HR profiles
PRH should be a good picker
IDK where Oregon get's his masters but he did a good job for slantsix64
the big ginders have high quality depending oh how hard they push their grinders and dress their wheels- their advice is more than spotty and usually worthless on Mopars
like the recent tip to use 270h in another thread

I second Mike Jones...

Bullet has a good rep and has Harold Brookshires masters.

Howard's grinds a quality piece.

When you order a shelf grind from the big guys it's likely your cam is being made in MI along with millions of OE cams. Just so you don't expect any old school extra attention. And the core is likely a cheaper material and heat treat.

I've been using Jim @ Racer Brown for several yrs and he has always done me right. Everything I bought performed just like he said it would

I like Oregon. Ken is a genius and talks to you like a regular dude so you can understand whatever it is he's talking about. Plus, you can actually GET HIM on the phone.

agree with Krosser
like to deal with someone who has actually designed a lift table and created a master

Oregon!

my bullet cam works great, they sent me a 440 cam to begin with, i asked for a LA cam, in the long run it just wasnt worth buying it as i live in canada, ended up being over 400$ canadian, thats 300$ US to you guys, that was just the cam, no lifters

The best thing you can do is get on the phone and actually TALK to these people. Buy your cam from the dude you get on with best. I've found that's it's much more important that the cam grinder and I are on the same page, than who's name ends up on the box.

That said I'll say to call as many as you can deal with, take notes and base your descison on who you are most comfortable with.

Jim at Racer Brown is a bit hard to get on the phone, but you are talking to the guy who'll grind the cam.

Same deal with Mike Jones.

I have used and loved every single cam I got from Cam Motion, and that's well over 150 cams. Never had one do not exactly what I wanted.

Again, the best you can do is get on the phone and TALK to them. I don't care what the youngins think about email and text, but to me, when you are doing important stuff like this, you need to have a conversation, and you can't do that with an email or an idiotic text. The flow of a conversation with actual voices will almost always take a different track than any other method will get you. IMO, you can't have a CONVERSATION other than on the phone or face to face. Sadly, that is almost a lost art these days.

Oregon cam grinding (in Vancouver Washington LOL)...
I've had conversations with Ken on the phone and easy to talk to.. ask for him specifically..
since he is so close to me I prefer to go in with my cam and lifters and have a conversation... Very nice personable old-school guy to talk to...
The cool experience is being there in the shop and seeing all the different kinds of cams and the amounts of cams.. Cam's standing up on end that are taller than you! Shopping carts full of cores...
He gave me exactly what I wanted both times..
No matter how much he tried to talk me out of the first cam I wanted it to be over-the-top radical and that's what I got LOL..
Then I came in and said, calm this damn thing down a bit... And it's perfectly what I asked for again.. I might go back to something just slightly more aggressive but we'll see...

I'm hoping Kenny will be at the swap meet. Haven't seen him in a while and I need to go by and have a visit with him.

I'm just going to do my normal thing and remind him how cool I am!!! And ask if the dope growers are still taking over all the buildings around him.
Oh I forgot to add the extra benefit of going to see Ken.. the smell in the air around the building that puts a permanent smile on your face for the rest of the day LOL.. I swear you can leave that joint excuse the pun half loaded from a contact....

And I don't have to remind people of how cool I am they can see that the minute my presence is made...

Good to see some consensus. I'll be contacting a few in the near future as soon as I pull my motor. Got some changes in mind and need an expert.

Thanks all! :thankyou:

Emailing a cam form is convenient but don’t expect a prompt response. (I’ve sent out about six and only Jones (twice for readjusted specs) and Howard’s got back to me in a normal time period (within a week) The rest nothing but crickets. I narrowed my list down to just a couple who have lobes and actual cams of any interest to me and will resort to that old fashioned phone call.
