Found some "Bollinger" Fitness Product push-up handles in a storage box (no longer sold/available last time I checked). Set them out for about a month, just looking at them everyday. Finally decided to do some push-ups with 'em.

First day it was ten. Then advanced (slowly) to 15, then 20. This morning did 22, but I was dead afterward. I never was much of a body-builder (genetically deprived I suppose). Seems like I am about maxed out now, but we will see what happens. Looking in the mirror, my "chest" is completely flat, built like like a ten-year old girl. Only reprieve is I am not "fat" at about 6 foot 1 inch and 180 pounds.

well, what are your goals?

getting toned, getting healthy getting so big you cant wipe your own but anymore?


i started doing some cardio last month, just to burn off some gut, get a little more stamina and simply be healthy

the wife says im starting to look better allready
 
No worries there dib’s! I just got the green light to start exercising again from my cardiologist. It’s been nearly 2 years. I was last benching 150lbs. & looking forward add some more weight. Enter my but only the bench last week. 50lbs. on the bar and my chest hurt for 2 days.

Im not a body builder! But I do listen and take advice from health conscious all natural body builders (2) that I work with and have won competitions in there age group.

I just like to maintain a decent physique. Keep the muscles tone and in check. This is very important to me on several levels. Being a Senior man on the job, with over 30 years, I’m not busting my brain or back doing the job. (Sometimes the brain.)

Faced with a bunch of down time and the ability to eat a really bad diet, which happens from time to time... the body can get into bad shape and into trouble.

Start slow and work into more. If you hit a plateau, stop the exercise for 3-5 days and then return to it. There is also no need to lift heavy! This is there first statement!
 
I agree with all Rob said. I've tried to stay in shape pretty much my whole adult life. But at 62 years old, I no longer feel the need to be King Kong with bloomers on.....lol. I work out with just enough to keep decent muscle tone, and more importantly...keep my muscles working instead of atrophying (sp?) like they will if you don't use them when you're older. When I go to the gym, I walk a mile on the treadmill at a fast pace, do bench, abs, and arms. I try to do legs about once a week, but a bitchy hamstring sometimes prevents that. Keep it up, it's worth it! :)
 
I thought this might end up with you saying the pushup handles broke LOL

Do 3 sets of pushups each session. Take a couple minutes between sets to let the body adjust, you will figure the right amount of rest time for you. The first set is warmup and stretch, maybe about 10-12 reps...feel good with no pain. Second set get the blood pumping and do 15-20 reps, just enter the burn zone. Then go all out on the last set after a short rest. But don't always go to complete exhaustion. Leave something in the tank often.

Some things you can try: do the last set very slow and even in a controlled fashion, lock out at the top and tighten and flex the pecs at that point. Do more than 1 session each day. Take 30 grams of whey protein before bed. If you hit a plateau, rest until you feel strong again.
 
I was told by several people’s that the whey protein drink is best Utilized right after working the muscles. Within 30 minutes. This way the muscles will be looking for what is being digested. Below is what I like best. I mix it with 2% milk.

@JDMopar , I hear ya brother! I don’t want my muscles to atrophy either. They were actually starting to. You know the things that you used to do when you were younger become very difficult when you get older and you don’t exercise your muscles. You’re like what the hell?!?! That crap used to be easy to do. That and putting weight in from a nearly stagnant work & life style. Winter is my biggest enemy!
Careful eating and exercise has alley wee me to drop 15 lbs. without starving or physically not busting my buns doing so.
 
LOL....the careful eating is the part I struggle with. I don't drink, don't smoke, don't fool with drugs, don't beat my wife or run around on her.....but I can eat the hell outta some food! I'm 6' tall, and weigh 230. I weighed 210 last year at this time, but I had just got out of the hospital with one foot in the grave and the other one on a banana peel! A lot of the weight I have put back on is muscle, but the belly is making a comeback. I need to push away from the table to keep from being a pigopotamus again. :BangHead:
 
I have tried that whey protein religiously once as a teen and once later in life when working out. The results both times: my body measurements shrank a slight bit (chest, arms, etc) and my waist increased a small bit.

At the 21 week live-on California Highway Patrol Academy, I went back for "seconds" at dinner time almost every evening and my body fat percentage (measured roughly with calipers that pinch here and there) actually went up a little as the course advanced. I was 6'1" and about 170 pounds at the time and 30 years old.

For me, muscle "growth" or "bulking up" was basically never achieved under any conditions or diet.
 
I'm 56. Always worked out, especially until I retired from the Air Force 15 years ago.

This past year I've felt a difference lying on the floor holding my arms up working on the car.

Guess I need to work out a little harder!!

Sounds to me like you're doing good. I probably caint do five. I can pull a trigger, though.
 
I chucked 6200 pounds of garbage on Wednesday morning, and 1200 on Thursday morning for a total of 7400 this week. In 5 years, this is probably an all-time high. I'm a one-man show;I do the driving, the walking,the chucking, and the hauling. Wednesdays are usually not more than 5 hrs but this week it went to 6.5, no breaks. Averages ~2000 pounds per hour, not including hauling.
My wife wanted me to do sumchit on Friday, but I told her I had to rest. I didn't say I was tired, cuz I wasn't. I think it was -18F , so my back got wetter and wetter, and before too long I took my outter jacket off, then my hat came off, then lighter gloves. After that I had to pace myself a bit so as not to overheat.
My dog Georgie always comes along and at a certain place, I let him out for his morning purge, after which he usually runs alongside the truck for a few minutes , But not Thursday; the wind was up, and he wanted right back into the truck; what a wuss.Later, he wanted to run so I let him out. But he only ran half the usual two miles or so. So I made him run the second mile,later. On a good day he runs 4 to 5 miles, and he prefers to run on an empty stomach.
I'm playing the tired card today as well,lol.
I'll be 67 come June.
On my wedding day in 77, I was 5'9 and 165, but my wife has done a fine job of fattening us up, so the last time I checked I was 220.
They say carbonated drinks suck the Calcium out of your body making your bones weak. I wonder how much you gotta drink, cuz 3 cans a day doesn't seem to make me any lighter.......... wait for it.... Padumpbump.

I used to be real nicely toned when I worked
I would run a roll former and make feedtroughs
They averaged 17 pounds a piece, and I averaged 1000 pieces a day
Grab one off the line, hit it with a flare die, stack it in a rack and grab another one...turns out I was lifting 17000 pounds of steel a day

I quit that job a few years ago and gotten a little flabier since
 
I get plenty...well too much...cardio at work. In a typical day I'm walking 5 or more miles throughout a nine hour day. Usually it's at a brisk pace so I know my heart is loving it.

I get a little strength workout now and again at work but not enough.

Don’t worry about a flat chest, worry when you have moobs (man boobs) and have to wear a Bro, or brazier.

I’m not happy about it either, but I’ve got a wife and kids to take care of, and barns full of hungry Mopars to feed! I’ve always been the guy to go up, sometimes too ridiculously high for any sane person, but I’m used to it. I don’t do it every day, but I do it on just about every job. The last 3 jobs have been up and down the stairs 50-60 times a day!

Stairs are a killer, even going down. I used to take the elevator to the 52nd floor (penthouse) in ARCO Headquarters in Los Angeles and walk down the fire escape stairwell to the ground floor when working graveyard shift security (not every night). The following day I could barely walk.
 
Reps build strength and muscle, not necessarily heavy weights. If you can’t do many pushups, do more reps on a bench press using less weight until you can.

And you definitely want more protein in your diet when trying to build muscle...especially important for older folks.

Oh man! I remember those days of windows and roofing.
Up the ladder with a bundle on each shoulder, no hands on the ladder, just feet moving upwards & fast!

Heavy weights add size & much strength.
Lots of reps add a more defined muscle and medium strength.
Adding carbs is good, cutting out starches and carbs after lunch at a minimum is what will get your weight down. The less carbs and starch, the better for building muscles and dropping weight. I cut 70lbs. In that very fashion.

Eating starches and carbs is OK, but you have to be aware of how it effects you personally. Some can eat a lot and be fine, some can’t eat but a speck and out on weight.
 
Agreed heavy weight and low reps, lots of bloody steak, much sleep will add size and strength. Eat tons of everything...animal fat, protein, carbs to gain mass. Concentrate on squatting, deadlifting, overhead and bench pressing. Never do heavy cardio before lifting, just a mild 10 minutes to warm up. Soon, with god's grace, you won't be able to scratch your own back.

Just doing pushups is better than nothing.
 
FABO is a killer. I spend too much time on these sites moderating. LOL I do get to our Sportsplex for some treadmill action. I need to get over to the weight machines and tone up my upper body. :BangHead::BangHead::lol:

Yea cardio and weights together give you balls of steel. Lifting strengthens the bones and actually increases bone size.
