Has anyone ever tried to cut holes for the original ashtrays into replacement rear arm rests? I am thinking it will destroy the new ones.

I wouldn't even consider it. Presence of ashtray says OK to smoke here, poke your gum wrappers, etc.., here, play with this spring loaded door.

If you remove the ashtray and look inside you should see a metal structure to support it. Because the repop armrests don't have this or the "moulded" lip around the opening, I decided to save my originals even though they were not perfect. Just one mans opinion.

Sparky, I hear where you are coming from, I actually like the ashtrays too, its definitely the throwback vintage look. Gone are the days just like NASCARs Winston cup.
Nowadays most people I know dont even smoke indoors, let alone use ashtrays.
Hell, I have 4 in mine, the front dash, center console and 2 rear armrests.
Glad they are there.

you also have a considerable size difference between old and new. You would be better finding NOS or having the old armrests rebuilt, It would be pricey but could be done

I thought they were different sizes also from looking at the photo. I put them side by side and they are the same size.

Why does that one on the left look like a 67 style (1 year only )compared to the right one ?
Couldn't you buy a set with the ash trays from a member here I'm sure someone has to have some for sale?
