I have a 71 Dart Swinger that I converted from drum to disc. I pulled the manual disc set up from a 74 Dart Sport. The conversation is done and works fine but. I have a rattle from the passenger side disc brake pad. It started out as an occasional rattle but as the pad wears it’s getting worse. I’ve taken it apart and checked for wear and loose parts. Everything seems tight and as it should. Is there an anti rattle clip or something that should be there? Does anyone have a picture from a 74 FSM they would be willing to post? I don’t know if I am missing something.

Did you bend down the "tabs" on the metal portion of the pad, so it fights nice and tight onto the caliper body?

I did not but, I’ll take a look and see if they need to be bent down. Thanks for your suggestion it’s definitely appreciated.

This ^^^^^^

The outboard pads have metal tabs that fold over the caliper. You need to take a pry bar and gently pry up on the bottom of the pad and smack the tabs down with a hammer. That tightens them up and will stop the rattle.

Going to check it and see if that’s what it is. Will be great if it’s something that simple. Sometimes you miss the obvious stuff.

I feel sure that's it. That explains why it's getting worse as time goes on. As the pads wear, the gap gets bigger. Good luck!

The rectangular anti rattlers in pic can get old. Mine rattled until I replaced them. You can probably bend them or replace them. Rusty's suggestion also.

In that pic are some rubber o-rings. just exactly where and how do they fit/go? anyone got a picture of them where they go? I'm so old I trained on Drum brakes as a kid and then went to work at a dealership before disc brakes came out, then moved to bodywork when they did come out. I've done my brake pads for years without them and never used them and all without a rattle, so are they needed? I tried FSM'ing them but no clear picture.

I've never used the o-ring. New to me .Noticed them for the first time when I got pic off Rock A. for reference. Maybe they hold the pad from falling while installing ?

I used to wedge a chisel in instead of a pry bar,and hammer the tabs. Seemed to work well for me.

The rubber O ring wraps around the caliper wings before installing the pads. I guess in theory the rubber should stop the pad freeplay.?

Just wanted to give an update and say thanks. I finally found a little time to work on my Swinger. You guys were right on. A few taps with a hammer and punch on the tabs of the brake pad and my rattle is gone. I greatly appreciate the help from all of you.

Well good. Glad it was that simple......there wasn't anything "wrong" and that's always a good thing.
