Dust caps not fitting

Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem? I replaced front bearings, races and seals. When I went to put the dust caps back on, they would not go on all the way. One more so than the other; but they both fit flush before. Is it a big deal if they don't go all the way on as long as they don't fall off? Car info: 1972 Dodge Dart Custom 318 v8 10" Drum Brakes. Thanks for any help/input...
 
Are you sure you have the new races seated all the way? That's the only thing I can think of that may keep the dust caps from going all the way on when they did before

Did you replace the bearing washer? Sometimes they are just a little bit bigger. Just enough to keep the dust caps from fully seating.
 
Yes I did have problems on a 71 cuda with front disc's. I tried a few different places and finally got some that fit. Don't remember where I got them though. The bad ones were only off by a hair, but just enough so that they would fall off. The caps were just too small.

A little oversize.
I have a fridge in the garage.
I put them in the freezer to shrink them.
One was easy, the other not.
The not was after I opened a Yuengling and took a couple gulps.
I tapped them on with a 1 inch drive socket.
The Mr Gasket ones that everyone recommends do not work... Too shallow.
 
They dented?
Many many dust caps get dented when they are driven on. i use a chunk of abs pipe big enough to grab the ridge and pound away with a hammer.
have seen them pounded to death,squished with pliers and siliconed on.
Have reshaped them somewhat so axle stub wont rub a hole in them. Ball peen and a block of soft wood. A second hammer to rap on the ball peen.
 
No dents.
I used a BIG socket that I got at work.
Like 2 or 2 1/2 inch, something like that.
 
You guys are missing the point.There just too small to be secured in the drum or disc. They just fall out. These are brand new dust caps were talking about that don't fit.
 
I think post #3 and 4 are on the money,,,,,

may be ??
the new races and bearings are a little thinner setting the hub back enough so that the spindle stub is keeping the dust cap from seating

Do you have the old ones?
 
#10...they dont fit. wrong ones. compare to old ones. Run poverty caps and call it a day.

I tried the O'reiley/auto zone/napa /Mr gasket ect in post # 9
these drums /disk on A body mopars are not the dorman chevy /ford dust caps

I had a problem on a '72 Challenger after changing bearings. The old cap ws a loose fit. Put it over the anvil end of my bench vise and tapped the edge with a hammer.
This thinned the metal a little which expanded the diameter. Made the fit much tighter and it didn't fall off.
