Advertised for someone to watch the place during my side trips: pets, garden, trash, a presence to keep the riff-raff away. Previously, I had "hired" a 59 year-old lady from London that I trained for a week and left her here on her own for almost a month. That worked out great for both of us.

First new candidate is a supposed part-time English teacher (for Spanish speakers) who lives with parents about 10 miles away. We arranged to meet at a local restaurant. She has her own wheels and showed up almost on time after having sent a "text" that she was on her way. She is only about five-foot tall and maybe a hundred pounds soaking wet. Ate like a bird. Then I introduced her to the two pets and she made an appointment to return for "training" @ 11:00 AM the day after Christmas. Yesterday was the appointed day, but she never showed up.

Today (a day late?) she sent a text confirming our 11:00 AM appointment (which I would have sworn was for yesterday). No matter. Then I got a phone call she was lost. She had turned up 3rd Street instead of 5th Street (she had followed me home from the restaurant that first day). I am not concerned, my spouse is like that too. Behavior that should be expected from like person.

I wanted her to call me each day she arrived so I know things were being taken care of in my absence. So the first "task" was for her to dial my USA cell phone from the landline. Problem was, she could not reach the cordless phone on the top shelf where I keep the charger. Not her fault, I moved the phone down a slot.

I noticed with the keys and locks, she kept turning the key the wrong way. Well, I do that once in awhile, too. Same thing with connecting/changing the hoses, not sure which way to tighten/loosen, no big deal, at least she is trying.

Asked her to climb the wooden ladder to the flat roof so I could show her how to inspect the gravity-fed water supply. She said she was afraid of heights and only made it halfway up the ladder and stopped. She got on her tippy-toes and just barely cleared the roofline with her eyes. I conceded to her phobia and asked her to come on back down to Mother Earth.

Proceeded to accompany her to walk one dog, give the other a bath, water the plants, trim some shrubs, turn on the closed circuit TV monitor, and turn a few drip-water line valves off and on. Called it a day, paid her the $16.00 USD (two hours) we had agreed upon (I had advertised offering $11.00 USD). She said she would begin daily visits in January. I figure after a month or so she will have caught on to all the ins and outs of her "duties".

Early 2020, I will be needing someone here during my next absence. What I like about the girl is: I don't foresee her having any hoodlum acquaintances that would come back to ransack my place in the future, you never know with "strangers". Since she responded to the help-wanted add, a couple of males have since responded also. Playing things by ear for now. (not an actual foto)

You sound like a patient and trusting sort. Kudos to you.

Me, I have been burned a few times by human beings. I could never exhibit that level of trust to an unknown. Well maybe with someone bonded and insured. I think I value material way too much. And that is unhealthy.

Run away. Eject. Find someone else.

If they can't find their way and can't communicate and can't follow a clock, they damn sure ain't following any of your directions.

Yeah, I'm thinking you should keep looking, if you have the time to do so, and train someone else. Best of luck either way.

Post an ad in Michigan for your Jan. trip just say: Month long job in sunny Mexico, warm, no snow, cheap food, $1000 for the month's work, if you call that work.

Sounds to me like you're hiring her "for the wrong thing".

Listen to your gut. Many people would do that for 8/hr, my college kid included!

I feel that this is a far more effective solution. Most non locals won't venture too far and won't have any hidden connections to local riff-raff.

There is a candidate from Canada, but she won't be available until later in the year. She likes to spend six months of the year in Mexico, and six months back in Canada. There is a small community in this neighborhood of mostly Canadian citizens.

The 27 year-old never handled a pitchfork before, did not even know what it was called (in Spanish). What's good about females in training is this: they don't get bent out of shape when you correct them as most guys naturally do. And when they screw something up a little, they move on and don't feel stupid or debased.

She is about as weak for a girl as I am weak for a guy. Basically can only carry 2 1/2 gallons of water at a time in a 5 gallon bucket so she has to make two trips. But at least she is trying, showing up, and pleasant to work with (and look at?).

Plus I still want to buy her car (a 2004 Peugeot convertible with less than 60,000 miles for less that $3,000.00.)

Sounds like your flirting with disaster........:icon_fU:

Not enough information.........need photos of the "lady"

We washed her car yesterday (the one I want to purchase) in part so I could examine the body damage, scratches, etc. A tiny bit of water seeped in past the driver's door seal and the passenger side mirror was loose. I also noticed the most recent registration sticker was from 2017. When I mentioned that, she acted (genuinely?) surprised.

After the vehicle was dried off, I took photos of the vehicle from the four points of the compass. Then (thinking only of trying to please my fellow forum members) I asked politely if she would like to pose in front of her car while holding my little poodle dog. She shook her head and declined to display her modeling skills. I had no choice to put the camera away without having acquired any live action shots. All I can tell you is that she has braces. Sorry about that.

In the first photo, you can see the wooden ladder in the background that she was afraid to climb farther than halfway up on.

Found some "Bollinger" Fitness Product push-up handles in a storage box (no longer sold/available last time I checked). Set them out for about a month, just looking at them everyday. Finally decided to do some push-ups with 'em.

First day it was ten. Then advanced (slowly) to 15, then 20. This morning did 22, but I was dead afterward. I never was much of a body-builder (genetically deprived I suppose). Seems like I am about maxed out now, but we will see what happens. Looking in the mirror, my "chest" is completely flat, built like like a ten-year old girl. Only reprieve is I am not "fat" at about 6 foot 1 inch and 180 pounds.
