If you did that on one of my printers at work, you'd be in the HR office, lol.
Shiii, we tossed laptops, PC's and tablets because they were security risks running android and Win7! Its amazing what a corp sees as waste or recycle or ? We PAY a service to haul away hundreds of pounds of scrap copper wire and gel batteries. The little Gell sealed FIOS backup batteries are worth $5 a piece at a battery shop and the copper is still ~$1.50 a lb. I asked for all the alkaline AA, C, D and 9V batteries we go through (hundreds a month) and put in a special bucket for a school battery drive (put on by our local waste management company). winning school gets $500 in school supplies. The ***** said NO, it was controlled waste and we had to have it hauled off and disposed of properly. I told her it was the Trash/recycle company but she wouldn't budge. That company bucket was pretty light the next few months....

Kudo's to you for trying for a good cause!
As far as what companies trash, I've argued this point from the other side many times. I used to work for an MSP (basically outsourced IT), and it makes much more sense for a company to trash IT stuff on a regular basis, both from a financial, and IT standpoint. I know it sounds like it wouldn't be, but if I broke it down for you it does make sense.
Where I work, we deal in medical info, so we have a lot of HIPAA and privacy laws to deal with. We deal with financial info too, so another boatload of laws. So, someone printing 1000 pages out of the blue would ring a lot of IT bells, and yes, you'd be in the HR office right quick. I'd be doing forensic stuff on your workstation, and my jr admins would be pulling logs. The IT dept. wouldn't be happy with you, lol.
When we get a lot of old stuff to get rid of, we try to get non-profits to take it free, but most don't take it, and yes, we wind up paying to get rid of it.
That said, if it were me, I wouldn't care if you collected batteries that someone was going to get paid to haul off, I'd be putting up buckets with you... so yeah, she's a *****, lol.

There are guys on this board who dont even have digital cameras, and I gifted a laptop to someone because they didnt have one or it was a 486. We had a stack of Itronix Workbooks and Panasonic Toughbooks (cast aluminum/magnesium chassis and cases, could sit on it and it would not even hang the hard drive) 3 feet high. I asked where they were going and the guy said scrap. Off lease and worthless. So I boned out all the 1GB mem chips (2 per laptop), encrypted hard drives, wifi chips, LiPo batteries and put them back in the 'junk closet' with all the other 'too good to toss' crap. Only way you could use those HDD's was to do a low level format in a linux rig. Most were pretty small capacity.
